This is just too funny.

CNN posted an article today on cnn.com with the headline "Canada Among Worst Polluters". Text includes statements like "A new study by a leading environmental group ranks Canada among the worst polluting nations in the industrialized world, according to 29 key environmental indicators."

Here is a link to the study, the table of the rankings is page 65.

I love how CNN prints this article and fails to mention that the US finished dead last on the ranking.

I will give them credit for stating that Canada, US and Belgium finished at the bottom of the pile.

Still too much. Can't wait to hear about this at work tomorrow.

*sigh*

I think the point he was making was that they wrote an article on how polluting Canada was, yet their own country scored more poorly.

They are, EPA has a lot more control over what happens and if you cross the line, well lets just say you better not.

In Canada, well we have that Kyoto thing, that’s good enough for the Liberals, too bad it does nothing to enforce anything. Another waste of $$$$

In the U.S., most environmental standards are higher, which is one of the reasons why the big three automakers like Ontario so much.

On the other hand, cities like Los Angeles and New York are "worse" polluters because they're so much larger than anything Canada has.

For example, I think that California has the highest auto emissions standards in the world, but Los Angeles alone has something insane like 13 million cars on the road every day.

Some of the posters here from Taiwan should be able to post about the almost unbreathable air of Taipei.

My point? Any top-ten list is crap.

I used to think Kyoto was scary, but now that I have had exposure to US regulations around New Source Review...ouch. Far more stringent, way more scary. Kyoto is a cake walk compared to the regs faced by the US power generators far as I can tell.

Tman1, if you read the article, you will understand why I think the headline makes no sense. Especially since it appeared on a US news site. The entire article is based on how bad Canada did....wouldn't you think that if you were doing an article you would pick out the worst performer, not the third from last?

I did read the article, I just found it a bit odd that you said the article failed to mention the U.S last and then state that it did mention that it was among the bottom.. so you figure it out. The article is based on Canadian sources so whats the problem? As stated above, there is other evidence that Canada is the worst performer not the U.S.

I didn't read the entire article, so correct me if I'm wrong, but the study was done by the David Suzuki Foundation, which is canadian. So my guess is that the article is canadian and was made for canadians to read. It was probably just bought by CNN to post on their website.

I live on the West coast & consider myself VERY lucky to live here. I have no idea what Ontario & eastward is like, but where I am our air is very clean. Maybe not as clean as I'd like it to be, if I were to sit down & analyze test results on it... but certainly cleaner than say... California's.

I was in California in February of this year, and honestly the air was disgusting. I was in the Sacramento area which is better than some areas I'm sure, but the air simply smelled bad, compared to the air I breathe up here. It was quite disgusting actually. No offense to anybody who lives in California.

You're probably right, it was an AP report which originated in ottawa, so its safe to assume that it was originally written with the intended audience to be canadian.

Les américains polluent plus que nous, mais à cause des vents dominants, sa nous reviens en pleine face.

That's right. David Suzuki is more about publicity and junk science than accuracy. He's the Mikey Moore of Eco-Science.
