Proculation Proculation: BartSimpson BartSimpson: Proculation Proculation: Here in Quebec, the Premier Jean Charest expressed his concerns about the US becoming more protectionnist with the democrats. It would hurt our economy a lot. Quite true. The Dems are not at all enamoured of free trade if it sends union jobs overseas or across borders. Also, Canada is now going to be the Conservative country on the receiving end of what appears to be a resurgent liberal government in the USA. Come 2008 the Dems may well control the US government. From the coverage on the news, a lot of the "new democrats" are more moderate and even closer to right wings ideology.
Thats just the thing, moderate democrats stole the clothes of traditional conservative poltics. And this is the way the moderates should be, the problem with the Repubicans, like the Liberals are in Canada they became arrogant and forgot the middle ground.
As a result the middle ground was lost both the Liberals in Canada and the
Republicans in the US because of their arrogance and corruption

$1: The U.S is divided into three legislative branches, excecutive, house of reps, and the senate. The house is made up of 435 seats , all of which were up for grabs, dems won the majority.
The senators are elected every 6 years, 1/3 of them are up for election every 2 years, so 33/100 were up for grabs. This is nearly deadlocked, and 2 seats are yet to be decided.
36 governerships were at stake, and Gop lost 6 with 2 still undecided.
legislation in the U.S. must pass both the house and the senate, after this, the Pres, has the right to VETO anything that passes.
In essence, what was lost, was the presidents, rubber stamp, which allowed him to pass almost any proposal through both the house and the senate.
Now concesions will have to be made in order for legislation to pass the house.
If the senate also falls, the President will be using his VETO power like it is going out of style.
But how do they elect people by a riding in their state? Or by there state itself? Why do they only have 435 members of their house of representatives? What is a governorship? Also why would the head of the government be a republican when the lower house is democratic?

The oil industry is already on a downturn in Alberta, now with the democrats in charge of the house and vowing to halt the United States dependence on foreign oil, I guess Alberta's hay day has come to and end.
So if you want to pick up a good bargain on a house or condo, wait a few months and you should be able to buy up some "bank owned" foreclosed property.
Will Canada suffer under a democrat run house in the USA? You bet. That ball busting dyke Nancy Pelosi they have running the house is what will screw up the country and kill the U.S. economy.
Time for Canada to join up with big brother

Proculation Proculation: Here in Quebec, the Premier Jean Charest expressed his concerns about the US becoming more protectionnist with the democrats. It would hurt our economy a lot. Protectionism and Isolationism are on the rise. Globalization is stalled if not going backward. It's not just the Dems. Certain segments of the Republican coalition hold these views quite strongly. Pat Buchanan recently wrote: $1: With the 2006 election, America appears to have reached the tipping point on free trade, as it has on immigration and military intervention to promote democracy. Anxiety, and fear of jobs lost to India and China, seems a more powerful emotion than gratitude for the inexpensive goods at Wal-Mart. The bribe Corporate America has offered Working America -- a cornucopia of consumer goods in return for surrendering U.S. sovereignty, economic security and industrial primacy -- is being rejected.
What is ahead is not difficult to predict.
The Doha Round of global trade negotiations is dead. Even if Bush cuts a deal with Europe, it could not pass the new Congress. In mid-2007, when Bush asks for renewal of his fast-track authority -- presidential power to negotiate trade deals, while cutting Congress out of any role save a yes-or-no vote -- it will be amended drastically or batted down handily.
But if the free-trade era is over, what will succeed it?
A new era of economic nationalism. The new Congress will demand restoration of its traditional power to help in shaping trade policy. When the U.S. trade deficit for 2006 comes in this February, it will hit $800 billion, pouring more fuel on the fire.

Unfortunately, you're right. Let's hope it doesn't happen. Ironically, I'm writing an essay on the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas.

The ridings are called district. It's kinda like a riding here, based on the population. They elect 2 senators per states. The governor of a state is like the premier of a province.
Here the head of the government depends of the parliament. In the states, the legislative branch is devided in three. You vote for a president, for a senator and for a representative. They are not dependent like here.

Each state is divided into districts, each elects a rep. and usually 2 senators(not at same time) California has 53 reps for example and 2 sens(making 55 electoral college votes). During a presidential election, the members of congress from each state, make up an electoral college, they vote by state on the presidency so basically, the presidency is won in incriments of states. if 30 of the seats in california went to the GOP, then the entire state would go to the GOP in determining the presidency. However, the Dem members would still hold their positions in the house.
The governerships are elections to determine the governers of each state, and they have authority over state legislation.

Avro Avro: The cons lost....awe poor babies listen to them whine. Hey these things happen when you lead the country into illegal. immoral and unneccessary wars, rack up huge debt, diddle pages, leave black people to rot in a flood, out of control health care costs and infringe on rights of Americans.
You must have read a different thread that contained the whining, as I see none in this one.
As for your second line, the use of force was LEGAL according to a number of UN resolutions you choose to ignore. Debt, yes but they are fighting two battles. Diddling pages, yes every single republican was guilty. Black people to rot? You mean the black mayor of New Orleans who didn't call the black state governor who didn't request federal help until days after the flood. I'll give you escalating health care costs as it seems to affect every country, ours included. Infringe on the rights of Americans? It seems protest is still alive and well in the US, maybe you can tell us when the Hollywood elites and the Dixie Chicks were sent to Gitmo for their statements!
You are in fact dumber than a stump.

Democrats won Montana. Only Virginia is too close too call but the democrat is in advance. Either the senate is even, and Cheney will have to vote a lot or the democrats take the senate too.
Surprising.

Clogeroo Clogeroo: But how do they elect people by a riding in their state? Each state has its own ''riding'' elections to fill up their own house of rep. and Senate. Clogeroo Clogeroo: Or by there state itself? ? Clogeroo Clogeroo: Why do they only have 435 members of their house of representatives? One for each state, then an extra per 1 million population per state. Then a few extra's for importance(GDP). Clogeroo Clogeroo: What is a governorship? Premier of a State, if you wish. Clogeroo Clogeroo: Also why would the head of the government be a republican when the lower house is democratic?
The executive branch(Président) isnt elected at the same time as the Senate, and House of Rép.
They elect the President independantly from the Senate and House.
