Full title: Canada, Mexico become part of U.S. ‘homeland’ during NSA Senate briefinghttp://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-p ... 28693.html$1: American reporters appropriately had a 'wait, what? moment' on Wednesday during a Senate Judiciary committee meeting. Senator Diane Feinstein, the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, was defending the National Security Agency's top secret spying when she brought out a prop identifying North America — the United States, Canada and Mexico — as the "Homeland".
"You may also be surprised to learn that our homeland now includes both Mexico and Canada, two areas that we understood to be autonomous nations that are not part of the United States," noted the Atlantic Wire, the publication which first reported the unorthodox map. [ Related: U.S. expects immunity for its cops working in new cross-border policing program ] "Normally, this would be written off as a design goof, as one of the NSA's (newly adept) graphics guys using a little more light blue than he ought. "This being the NSA, we're not inclined to offer that benefit of the doubt. Is this a way of blending in Canadian and Mexican terror activity disruptions (which, we'll remind you, is different from actual plots interrupted) to give a larger sense of the NSA's success at halting terrorism within our borders?" Or, perhaps the term was used in the spirit of greater cooperation as Canada and the U.S. work towards the Canada-U.S. perimeter security pact. On Wednesday, for example, the Canadian Press reported that the United States wants its police officers to be exempt from Canadian law when taking part in cross-border policing initiatives. Maybe the term isn't so far fetched? Or maybe it was just a case of an ignorant staffer not knowing his or her geography? Apparently, 2 out 10 Americans can't find Canada on a map of North America.

I'd say this article depends on how seriously you take the US senate these days.

Always err on the side of stupidity, which better explains most gaffes than does malice. But only 20%? I'd have though it was much higher, after watching so many 'Talking to Americans'.

Gotta sneaking suspicion this is the primary reason.

xerxes xerxes: I'd say this article depends on how seriously you take the US senate these days. Actually, as I read this it was the NSA saying that you folks are part of the US 'Homeland' during a Senate hearing.

THAT trip should be good for a full cavity search by the Homelands Security agents taking up their positions in every Canadian airport.

Yah it is the NSA, feck those jack@ss's at NSA lol. Canada and Mexico are and always will be sovereign nations. Mexico does have a closer thing with the US then Canada. I don't recall reading US bailing out Canada more then twice unlike Mexico. Nor do we have any military grade fire fights happening on the Canadian Border like the Mexican border and no body parts being displayed on the Canadian like Mexico. Atm US-Mexico Armed forces with DHS are all working together joint, something not seen on the Canadian Border. Also Mexico shares a common with the US they are the United States of Mexico Officially and sovereign no common wealth member. They aren't subjects of a powerless monarchy, no GG. They are like the US but there own way and only answer to themselves. One cant be Sovereign true unless they stand on there own and has to write there past to the book and learn. Nothing comes free, not even Freedom is guaranteed free.

If we're part of the homeland does that mean we can default the full cost of security and defense to the southerners? Save ourselves a few bucks if it works out that way.
