Here is an interesting article that is relevant to this discussion. I won't post the whole article but it is a good one to read.

$1:
Are We Really as Awful as We Act Online?

It’s not brutish human nature that prompts nasty posts and tweets, the author says. But how we evolved does play a role.

This is why things turn ugly:

current-events-f59/mass-shooting-in-toronto-t121577-255.html

When a moderator purposely abuses his power to lock down a topic after getting in the last word, it causes things to spill over into other topics. There was no reason for that topic to be locked.

I do agree that was kinda in poor taste. If you wish make a topic locked, it needs stay locked, for everyone. Moderators included.

It doesn't matter. Others posted links with a crime analyst, I posted a link with a CF firearms instructor and a special forces operator. Who people decide to believe is up to them. I don't really have a dog in the race, cause whether he's a terrorist or not, or trained or not, doesn't really matter to me. I'm more interested in truth and not being dishonest. If he's a trained terrorist, well called Bart, if not, I wonder if we will see the concession made that he was wrong, or will it be a conspiracy.

You'll have to forgive us on that, there are no written rules so we are making this up as we go, but trying to be as fair and impartial as we can.

I didn't lock that topic. And when I responded I did not know that my moderator abilities were working again....which is why I was able to post in a locked topic.

Had I know it was locked I would have respected the lock.

Edit: I've gone back and removed the post.

Not being a dick, even though this will be seen as dickish... That's one of those "unwritten" rules, that should go without saying. Anyway, its fixed we learned a lesson and I'm an asshole. So... all is right with the world.

No, you aren't being a dick. Like Bart said, if he had seen it was locked, he wouldn't have replied.

But the 'Quote button is still there for us, and it still works even if a thread is locked. Quirk of the software I guess. Unless you scroll down to the bottom, he wouldn't have seen 'Thread Locked' at the bottom.

I also posted to our Moderator thread that I locked it after locking it, so if he's looking at posts chronologically he wouldn't have read I locked it till after posting. Now everyone knows to look for our Mod thread first, and check it out before posting.

By all means, hold us to account! We expect it. Don't criticize our decisions (no one for example disliked the thread being locked for 24 hours), but by all means point out mistakes like this to us. Our moderating is specifically to make this a more enjoyable place to be, so if we aren't doing that we want to know.

Just my 2 cents...

I can totally see how Bart made that error. I was certainly not aware we could post in threads that were locked by other mods but now I know to pay attention to that. I am still trying to get accustomed to navigating around the mod stuff and seeing how it all works when it comes to reported posts and such.

As DrC said please let us know if something is slipping through the cracks. I know for myself right now it's ironic that I have mod ability but not for the specific newsmod stuff I was assigned to do. Weird glitch. We'll get it worked out.

I saw this opinion piece today, and thought it would fit nicely in this, and a couple other threads. ;)

$1:
Why 'owning the libs' might actually be good political strategy

To "own the libs" or not?

That's the question with which conservatives are grappling in light of the remarks made by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley at a recent gathering of Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization. Haley argued that those on the right ought to engage in more persuasive, higher-order arguments instead of cheap memes and catch phrases intended to "own the libs" — in other words, to humiliate or debase liberals.

"I know that it's fun and that it can feel good," Haley said, "but step back and think about what you're accomplishing when you do this — are you persuading anyone? Who are you persuading?"

Many right-wing traditionalists applauded Haley for her comments. And that's the problem. This dated and fusty view of conservatism is part of the reason why the right has traditionally had trouble making inroads with young voters.

. . .

Ultimately, if conservatives hope to make progress with young voters, they must shed the image of staid, uptight conservatism. Indulge in memes or other viral online tactics, but do so from a base of solid, defensible policies.

If anything the election of DJT and so many other outliers both right and left should tell the dried up old farts of both persuasions that 'business as usual' is a thing of the past.

Evolve or die.
