Johnny-Canuck Johnny-Canuck:
But Buzz DOES work for a Vancouver radio station doesnt he???
Catching the Buzz
Buzz Bishop is the master of his domains. He's the afternoon drive announcer for Vancouver's top-rated radio station, Z95.3 FM, while his alter ego, cyberbuzz, dominates the global dial. cyberbuzz is a 60-second radio feature about wired culture. "We do everything from talking about a cool new website or toy to interviewing stars about their web habits. We also talk a lot about MP3 stuff." cyberbuzz was born in 1995 when Buzz began to write a weekly column for the radio station and its website. When the feature hit the Top 30 Countdown, it caught the attention of marketing director Tom Shipman, who was already doing a feature on Canadian radio stations but wanted to create a younger, hipper version. Now partners, Buzz and Shipman have sold cyberbuzz to radio stations in Australia and England. They've also signed a distribution deal for the US. "My business kind of started by accident," says Buzz. "I was doing my hobby and someone said, 'Your hobby can make money.' So my advice to entrepreneurs would be to take a look at their hobbies and see if there's a way to make money with them. It's already something you love to do, and that's the best kind of job."
