ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog:
Sorry, but I could never take a pet to the vet clinic to be put to 'sleep'. It is NOT a quick and painless process for the animal.
It is now.
I just took my dog to the all night vet a couple of weeks ago and before they even euthanize the pets now they give them a tranquillizer shot and allow you to hold on to them till they fall asleep.
You can also be present when they are given the final shot if you so wish. I couldn't do it but I now people who have and they say it's painless and quick now because the pet is already asleep.
Hopefully it's this way for all the pets because I hate to think about any animal suffering unecessarily because of a vet's insensitivity.
15 years ago, when I had to put my dog to sleep, it took as long as it takes to get under for surgery in a hospital. 5 seconds. It went exactly how you describe. Her last look was at a cat (she LOVED to chase cats...). Then she was asleep. They gave her the shot that stopped her heart, and she did not realize it. She died quickly and peacefully. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do...
I'm sorry for your loss
