I have heard that eight out of 10 Canadian provinces do NOT teach Canadian history in highschool. I know in Ontario they do. Not very well and not nearly enough in my opinion.
I would like to hear from people in other provinces. Does your province teach Canadian history? If no, then why not??

what is going in school these days we were taught Canadian history almost from the first grade. When I got into high school it was called current affairs. I have to admit tho in grade six we were taught more american history. Which even back then kinda burnt me up.

when i was in highschool 4 years ago cdn history was mandatory at my school in winnipeg, but now for my younger sister it's optional.
i'm sure every highschool in canada has a cdn history class, whether or not students have to take it probably varies.

Can someone pkease explain to me why Canadian history is optional? What's the problem isnt our history as interesting as other countries? That is total bullshit. I supose now all the students learn is readin writin and rithmatic . I think it is a sad state of affairs when they say oh well you can take it or not. My feeling is BULLSHIT it should be madatory. JUst goes to show why we have a identity crisis because the damn teachers wont teach classes about this country. Just pisses me off I may not be as smart as rev buford etc but dammit I liked learning about canada when I was a kid. I still do. Aw fuck it I am pissed off.

Canadian history isn't mandatory largely because we lack a national education plan. Education is in the hands of the provinces, and they don't see a need for it.

but then again, it's not like canadian history is all that exciting that'd you'd rember it all afterwards
some french guy stumbles onto canada, sets up a settlement, british come, take it over, HBC goes around killing anything with fur, kicked some yankee ass, inveted the telephone, formed canada in 1867 with 4 provinces, manitoba and the rest join later, fight in 2 woirld wars, legalized gay marriage and weed to piss yankees off even more
hohum

... to me, I have to agree somewhat with Skid... As one American journalist put it... our history isn't as exciting as the Americans, because we haven't had as many wars.. Our history pre-1900 was a good history... We held back the Americans, we quelled the French rebellions, and we broke away from one of the strongest empires in the world without a single shot... Our WWI and WWII history is where all the excitment and patriotism really is... Vimy Ridge for example... We took that spot first try from the Germans while the French and English failed every time they tried...
I'll get some more points of where we have prevailed while others had failed...
(Not to bash anyone, just to show that Canadian History is good!)

it's 1 damnit not i! #1 sk1d
american history only seems more exciting cause they make all these movies making everything so dramatic and grand
they always seem to leave out how during thier wars the generals were always drunkards or morons that got there cause their parents paid for them to get into the army but at a command level so they wouldn't have to fight.
i wonder why there aren't any disney movies about 'nam

In B.C. ya dun really learn anything about Canada until....Gr.9 when they start teacheing the Discovery of the Continet. I'm in Gr. 11 now learning WWI,Halifax Explosion and life after war and the 1920's in Canada. Everything before Gr.9 is all history of Europe, I remeber doing the mediteranean in Gr.6. and Vikings in Gr.8
