Now this is an idea I can get behind. I am not a Global Warming alarmist but I love the idea of saving energy and helping the environment.

Global warming alarmist is mainly an insult made to intimidate.

I'll bet you have a job writing for fortune cookies.

I like the idea of using the electricity to run first and when power is low have the gas kick in to recharge them. Are there any current vehicles that do that?

The Chevy Volt does exactly that, but it's currently in development and not yet for sale.

I live in the US and you live in Canada. How can I intimidate you? I also didn't mean it in any such manner. I have just taken so many anti Global Warming stands that people might get me confused for someone that believes in that drivel.

True, I addressed this issue in my first post. Our current battery technology won't work for our needs. I think we would need fuel cell like storage and energy distribution system to work well.

I prefer questioning our needs.

So, there is no need to have a transportation system that doesn't rely on fixed infrastructure and alternative fuels? Are you sure about that? Not saying it isn't possible, but you are going back to horses with this.

CamAm1, any hybrid car does just that. It would be an excellent choice if you drive in the city. The emissions from the vehicle are considerbly less than pure gas vehicles.

Actually I think high oil prices will force the issue, so I'm actually excited. It takes a long time to build the plant for the alternatives. It generally takes 10 years to get a nuclear plant ready, 14 years if your Dalton McGuinty and want to decide weither or not to go with the made in Ontario reactors.

With fewer cars in cities, it will be less dangerous to deliver the mail by feet or with a bicycle.

I imagine you're talking about coal-to-oil, right? It's cleaner than oil, or conventional coal, and economically viable at current prices.

The only real problem with it is it releases CO2 in the manufacturing process. So if you don't mind CO2, but you don't like actual air pollution Coal-to-oil is the way to go. Even with CO2, that can be sequestered or sold to oil companies to release more oil from old wells.

The technology continues to improve. We should hear more about coal-to-oil in the near future.

Some more on coal-to-oil

Coal is nowhere near clean. Coal plants spew massive amounts of mercury, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and all manner of other nasty stuff. They're in the same league as smelters and tar sands opertions for toxic emissions.
