after seeing a few of the conservative attack ads on tv that go after michael ignatieff , i can't help but be reminded of the faith of the last 2 liberal leaders .

Paul Martin fell vitim to the sponsorship scandal but also highly effective and deadly conservative attack ads during the 2006 election , he did have a big lead going into that election but it did not survive the attacks . but thats all history now .

Next up came Stephane Dion , he fell victim to his own mistakes but also conservative attacks ads that he was not a leader and not up to the job . also that he was going to impose a carbon tax during a time of record high gas prices . he seemed to be an easy target though and had little luck or did he connect with the voters to begin with .

now comes Ignatieff , he had a bit of a " free ride " for a while but the attacks have started , as he has spent 34 years outside of the country and once even refered to america as " his country " . he has left them with alot to go after , although little on the policy front . as he seems to have no solid opinions other than what the pollsters tell him to say .

so you have to wonder if iggy's faith will be any better .

what i find interesting is chretien seemed to survive previous attacks , since i'd say he was worst than those 3 liberal leaders combined , more corrupt , partisan and just pure evil .

I object to the language.
Dion wasn't brought down by lies or falsehoods but his own failings. Dion's crippling English or his lack of charisma were not made up by the opposition. The ads showed off those faults but none of them were made up.
I don't call that an attack ad.

The "secret agenda" spin was an attack ad. It had no basis and in fact and was a total fabrication. It was later carried to such a fevered pitch that it became a joke with the "soldiers with guns" series. All of that was ungrounded by facts and was another Kinsella fabrication.

That said, I do believe that Iggy's political career will definately not survive this. This is where all these accomplishments on alternate careers will come back and bite him in the ass.

well for sure dion wasn't brough down by made up allegations , there was alot there to attack him on and he lacked anything at all toback himself up. there was no personality and he just didn't connect with anyone .

as for iggy i don't think he will surivive these attacks without any damage , there is going to be damage . if you throw this many attacks at the wall , something is going to stick as they say .

As for me I see a bit of desperation on the part of the Tories.
I don't remember ever having seen a party attack so brutally before.

I saw the first "Tory slam Iggy" commercial on French television today.

well ignatieff is the one threatening to bring down the government as early is june , so what did he expect , i suspect the conservatives rushed these ads after chretien and martin said the liberals should try and force as early election . so they should of expected something like this would happen and that the conservatives would repsond to such threats .

I'm not partisan to any party so I vote for who I think can do the better job, some times for the party but sometimes for the local candidate.

I don't like these smear tactics at all, best to see all sides fight over issues and who's the better candidate for the job.

These tactics kinda backfires with me and I would guess that there are a lot of people like that. It makes me lean in the opposite direction.

I don't see how a few advertisements would change anyone's opinion. I'm told it affects a few swing votes and that makes it important, though.

I think you don't understand the meaning of an "attack ad". An "attack ad" is one that is based on lies or half truths. Iggy clearly stating that he in an American with his own words on video is not an "attack", it's reality.

Can you imagine if the Liberals had a video of Harper proclaiming that he is American?

To Apollo and RR...

An attack ad is one that is meant to show the opposition in a bad light or meant to harm the reputation of the opposition. Whether you think it's a lie, straw-man, half-truth, or truth. These ARE attack ads.

It's predictable that the Canadian media are now running Iggy attack ads on behalf of the Liberals.

Here's a good example of the "hidden agenda" lie and how it failed so badly.

I can see that Dion could be a hell of a good CPC spokesman for this next election. :D

I think these ads are more about the great Mulroney going down in flames. It don't look good on the cons. [B-o]
