Montreal — Like many Canadians, Conservative Leader Stephen Harper has trouble holding on to his plastic red poppy.

During a speech to a pro-federalist group Monday, Harper used a small Maple Leaf pin to keep the poppy in place on his lapel.

But on his way to a news conference, one of his advisers suggested the pin be removed because “the Legion doesn't like members wearing them.”

Mr. Harper explained he used the pin because the poppy doesn't stay in with the straight pin that's usually provided with the plastic flower.

Reporters overheard the conversation as it was transmitted by a small wireless microphone Mr. Harper was wearing.

The Tory leader then told his advisers to “get a pin that works.”
Mr. Harper added that “they only had 80 years to perfect the technology.”

Now I'm quite sure the Fiberal apologists will jump all over this like hyenas, shouting that Harper hates vererans and wants to sell them all for medical experiments to apease his evil master, GWB.....
..but.. How many of you use one of those little Canadian flag pins to secure you're poppys? I do and I've seen a lot of others do it too.

One might ask, who cares?

There's an art to it... you push the pin through the lapel, and then poke it through the very edge of the poppy. There's no way for it to fall off then.

I usually push it back through again, to hide the pin.

What they should do is make a poppy centre pin (like the flag pins) that look just like the normal centres...

To be honest I haven't seen one nor do I think its a big deal. I'll expect your apology if no Liberals make any sort of stink about it. The question is if the situation were reversed what would the conservatives do? Can I assume they would since you have set a precendent in that kind of speculation?

I've thought I should design the small black centre pins too. I've done the Canadian flag centre pin as well, this time around I glued the black centre to a Canada pin so that it's well hidden. But I also pop in a loonie and get another pin almost every time I see them.

i have seen it done and i have seen the veterans and legion members complain about it. its just not the proper and uniform way to wear them.
My way around the problem is to keep a bunch of change on me and make alot of donations, collecting a few extras, and have a couple in the house a couple in the car, maybe an extra in the inside pocket, so if i happen to loose it i have one close by....

DerbyX: I was just at the Fiberal Wrong E-mail address thread where the Fiberal-Lovers were downplaying or dismissing. Please note that I just posted the news and didn't apply a spin because I didn't think it was a big deal either.
I read this front page story this morning and thought it was strange because, without Harper, it's not newsworthy. It's just another example of media bias. I don't know the the Globe & Mail is a Con.friendly paper but if you find one, tell me.

You did apply a spin. Right here:

You are automatically reacting as if they have atacked harper over it. Whats more you will carry that thought and feeling that they have even if they don't. Same with the e-mail. That is about as on the up and up with helping the nice nigerian minister get his money out of the country and into your bank account.

No no no. You missed my point and I've no enthusiasm to correct it.
Did you read the story? Is it worth being on the front page of the Vancouver Sun?
It's been shown that many readers only read the headlines and here they see "Harper complains about poppy pin". My god. Harper must hate veterans, on the week of remembrance day too. That's more than enough ammunition for them to spin off on some prescription methadone induced hallucination about secret agendas and secret ultra-religious sacrifices. Give them time to get them warmed up.

How did you know about my millions from Nigeria?

Worth? Not really, but the Sun, everyone of them is a crap newspaper. The damn things are 90% adverts. As for being poltical, they certainly are not Liberal friendly. The T.O. sun certainly isn't. Being this close to an election makes even mundan moves by all party leaders more newsworthy then normal though.

Like the Dog River Howler headlines? Those are the type that sell papers though.

Wait till they do it before just assuming it and condeming them. I see the conservatives use the same tactics, hell every party in every country does it.

I got them by accident. If you send me a check for $2000 to cover the transfer fee I'll wire the money to your bank account!

There are little pin cover things available. They keep the pin from slipping out. If you are putting the end of the pin back inside your shirt or jacket, you can also put a piece of pencil eraser on the end. That helps hold it and keeps it from poking you in the nipple too.

I'm surprised that people, especially those in the public eye, don't know this stuff. It isn't just Harper, I've heard others make the same complaint.

Poppy pins used to be covered with cloth so they didn't fall out. I'm not sure why they stopped doing that...cost, I guess.

Come on Derby, you know the Cons would have attacked Martin for it. Lord knows they pounced on Chretien when he mumbled something derogatory to Chirac about the US.

It's just like the softwood lumber issue. If Martin speaks up, he is hurting our relations with the US, and if he doesn't, then he doesn't care about the Canadian business community.

Now gentlemen listen carefully...

Take a small pair of needle nose pliers.... place a small amount of pointy end of poppy pin in pliers....bend to 180°.... looks, and acts like a small fishing hook.... push into lapel ....

Disclaimer...will not be held responsible for surgery to remove hook from left tit

There's also my preferred option...

Quit being so cheap and buy another one. They're not expensive... though they're priceless.

I was selling them today, and was pleasantly surprised how many young people were buying. 8)
