I served on the board of directors of the SPCA for 5 years. Unfortunately, I can attest that we as a society are in no position to take the moral highground on the issue. During my time there, we fought tooth and nail to have legislation (Bill C-50) that ammends the criminal code (written in 1892) to consider animals as living beings and not objects or property under the law. The Bill has yet to pass and so, in essence, we are legally where China is today with respect to animal rights.

The point isn't that we take the moral highground, its that we ARE the moral lowground. Even worse than the states (for all the states bashers). However, I am still looking to find out whether the furs are also provided in Canada or just imported. Quite right that we can't take the moral highground-just the opposite.

Indeed, this group should focus on cleaning Canada's house before calling for bans on foreign countries. How can they possibly be justified in their criticism, must be a Liberal group

I think you misunderstand, it's not a ban on foreign country's, its a ban against these fur imports. Just like in the US and soon to be european union. By not requiring labels any of these can be brought into canada and people don't know what it is. So it IS cleaning our own house. I don't think its going on within Canada, at least this group hasn't said and I can find no evidence of it. If it were I have no doubt they'd be naming names.

I think you misunderstood my point. The LAW in Canada considers animals objects, property and mere material. Be it the fur of what we consider pets or beaver fur, there is NO difference under the law. Further to that, the law provides no parameters for the inhumane OR humane way in which said fur is harvested. You can't call on a ban when nothing is considered illegal about it.

I get that, but those are TWO issues. Animal rights in canada, and the import of animal furs. This campaign is only aimed at the latter, no doubt realizing that there is no chance for the former. I couldn't agree more about animal rights, I think the point about the puppies and kitten fur is like the seal hunt-meant to target public attention on a single event. As you say, with no rights there is a real possibility that these furs could be coming from Canada and put into garments right here. So far I cant find any info on that.

It's much simpler that that. I can't call for Canada to ban imported lollypops because my kids get cavities from them. If I'm serious about it, I have to take care of legislation first. In this particular case, we're talking about cats and dogs which are in a legal void in this country.

If you think the cats and dogs fur is sending shockwaves throughout the world, you should see the horror on people's faces when the Canadian baby seal slaughter pictures circulate every year. I've heard some pretty nasty stuff about Canadians across the pond concerning this practice.
