Awesome. I never thought I’d see the WC in Canada and now it’s in my own backyard.

$1:
When the Alberta government announced $110 million in funding for the bid earlier this year, it stated that Edmonton had to host at least five games, more than the bid book called for.
Thanks, UCP.

Was that the reason Edmonton was passed over?

That is the rumour that insiders are passing along. Edmonton was only going to get 2 or 3 games, now we get zero. Best summer ever!

Serious question-how much public money is going into this?
The Olympics have been money pits for years now, to the point where countries that bid on them end up attracting public protests!
That was what killed Naheed Nenshi's hopes of having Calgary host the 2026 Olympics. He didn't get any money from Ottawa, and Rachel Notley attached a string of requiring a public referendum before the province would give any money.
The No side pointed out how many Olympics have turned into white elephants, and that pretty much sunk it.

TBD as far as I know. Back in 2018 in the BC government said no way to hosting because of some of the costs involved. Not to mention the cost of kickbacks to FIFA and the fact that FIFA will turn BC Place into its own little fiefdom for the duration of the tournament.
An actual grass pitch will have to be installed at BC Place. I remember when the Whitecaps did that back at Empire Field it cost $150k so I would expect that be higher for BC Place.
