Gonna hijack this most recent tech thread for a different reason. Anyone know of a good free DVD burner program online? I've got about 200 movies on the existing computer that I've gotten off of *ahem* torrenting. I'd like to burn them to disc to clear some space but I don't want to buy a multi-media program with a burner function because I really don't need to mess up the computer with a thousand different other functions that I'll never use. Or one that switches all my stuff to Google without permission because the authors are in bed with the mega-giant. Just a straight-out one-purpose-only burner program, that's all I want.

Suggestions pls, will be appreciated.

If they're on the computer you should be able to just pop in a blank, pick burn files and select the movie's filename....

Jeez that radio came from a 4 years newer Jeep, upscale one and is even lamer than the P.O.S. that came with my 2014.

If you put a burnable disc in the drive, select a file and right click it, there should be an option to 'burn to DVD' or 'burn to disk'. Select ~4gb of 'files' and go to town. If it's too much, it should warn you.

Even though it requires $500 worth of damn adapters and data linkers, I'm still considering an aftermarket radio instead of the freebie. Those burned music CDs are so old they're stuck together in a tower/lump and suck. Plus I really want Bluetooth for the phone.
Can you stick a flashdrive of mp3s in the USB port and play them like I can on my TV? Plus I'd kind of like XM in case I change my mind now I know you can phone and harangue them and they'll give it away damn cheap just to get or keep a customer.

Even the factory radio in my '09 can do that. Pretty much every file format too, including OGG and FLAC.

Every one I know used to use Roxio, used to be bundled on most computers. It was easy to use and AFAIK still around.
"Ancient DVD player"... I see a new DISC channel show. Antique fax machines, VCRs from past... only aliens could've invent them...

Looks at BluRay DVD that hasn't been touched in 6-7 years....

I stuck with the built-in Windows burner, like Caleb described. The reviews for the "best free DVD burners" were informative, especially the comments sections with most of the users saying things like "don't download! it's full of malware!". Yes, use our great new software that rewrites your entire system, locks up all your defaults so you can't fix them, and sends all your information to our "office" in Abbottabad.

DVDs are a specific format. What is created when you follow my instructions is just a 'data' disk. If you want to use it in a regular DVD player, you have to use one of those programs like Roxio to create it in DVD format.

But I wouldn't trust many of the sites out there that offer 'free' software. If it came with your DVD drive, then use it. Otherwise it's just a disk for your PC.

I think it's the player though, because it's old, like 2005 vintage. It's always been finicky about certain types of blank DVDs that have movies copied on to them. It will play DVD+R's but won't abide by DVD-R's or re-writables. I also suspect that even with a cleverly *ahem* acquired torrent that there could be some sort of protection hidden in the data that renders it unwatchable if copied to a disc.

Just the way it is. I'll try to hook the laptop up to the TV later with a HDMI cable and then just watch the movies off of the computer DVD drive. No big deal, aside from Windows making it as confusing as possible to set up a TV as a second monitor. Whatever.

Yeah it's probably your DVD player. Also, double check the file you use. If it's an mp4 or mpg or that kind of encoding, it should work. But there's a popular encoder now, MKV, that simply does not play on DVD players or even off of USB's on smart tv's.

And I have yet to find a good converter for that type of file to boot.
