EyeBrock EyeBrock:
Beaver, new immigrants need to know that although we are a peaceful country, we are quite willing to fight for the freedoms we have.
They also need to know the military are an extension of the country and act on the orders of parliament, unlike in the developing world where the army is usually a tool of state oppression.
To the first point, I think they realize that this country, like almost every country that has a military, is willing to fight for its interests. Like myself and many Canadians, they may skeptical of whether we really fight foreign wars "for our freedoms" these days rather than fighting for other reasons such as maintaining diplomatic relations with other western nations or advancing western geopolitical interests.
To the second point, thats fine, but as I said that is something that is within the broader context of describing our system of governance and democratic principles. That is separate from regailing them with military trivia and stories of heroism, etc, that are not in the broader context of Canadian history and governance.
