$1000 ... after he is in country, and in clear violation of the rules..

no, they can ask for more.. he is big fat rich canadian and (as Bart said ) Jewish

businessman.. he has more than $1000. the article refers to 10 times that amount..

as far as i got it, they wanted the money for giving him the docs back and having him out of the country right after! so there wouldn't be much stir, no stir actually, just the money in their pocket.
If he had nothing else on him it wouldn't help anything even if he had millons on his account!

I believe a status of God's chose people doesn't give them special rights in terms of travelling without proper documents or being as stupid as to give their passports to almost strangers?

If he was invited into India to retrieve his passport from the Indian authorities that would be called "entrapment" when he was then arrested by those same Indian authorities for entering the country without the passport of which the Indian authorities are already in possession.

Again, were he an Israeli and the facts were established as above, the Mossad would be coming to get him and they'd not hesitate to kill any Indians who got in their way. Where India and Israel only established relations in 1992 and the relationship has been rocky since then I doubt there'd be any love lost between them.

The Israelis take that "Never Again" business quite seriously, you see.

i see, i know about Mossad
what i'm trying to say is that we have no proofs that he got there on the invitation and all. On the other hand to trust Indian police on the border with Nepal... look, some people are just being idiots!
and as long as they didn't violate the law of they country by putting him into jail they are technically right. And it's up to them actually to decide what measures to apply unless violating the law. Although, I don't support such sanctions, of course!

thanfully, i have Chinese residence permit! But in the worst nightmare i cannot imagine self crossing Chinese border with no docs! But you have to know that Chinese police on the borders (not sure about the western region, but have no doubt about HK) is very well monitored, and noone would offer you a bribe. They'd report you to the higher officials in no time! well... and they got too many people to deal with, so you'd be deported

This is like some jokes---you had to be there....

Here's the way it works......

India just doesn't give a shit about the publicity.

This amount of fuss is just telling them to raise the ransom.

In these matters sending somebody (an agent) to a higher official just involves having to bribe him as well.
