PENATRATOR PENATRATOR:
Well maybe the child made the decision he wanted it done?

End Sarcasm

I rememeber a lot of people here agreeing that it was ok to allow a child to make the decision to have a sex change operation a couple months back.

As far as I am concerned parents in both cases should be locked the fuck up and have their heads examined

Yup.

Did you hear about the Rabbi who didn't charge for circumcisions?

He only took tips. :P

More on topic:

Did you hear about the Rabbi who sewed a bunch of circumcisions together to make a wallet?

When he rubs it the thing turns into a suitcase.

from my perspective all forms of genital mutilation should be banned. What really boils my blood is this practice is still continued.

I agree. Make the legal age for circumcision 18, then lets see how many are devout enough to do it. Proves you really, really mean it.

Amazing the things people will do in the name of religion.

I did not have my son circumcised and as andyt points out with his statistics on how much the rates have dropped it is a procedure that is slowly disappearing aside from those who do it for religious reasons. With people being more educated that it is not required for hygienic purposes most parents will choose not to utilize a procedure that in my opinion is barbaric.

I did it for my son purely for hygienic reasons and I'm not at all religious.

The rate of infection for uncircumcised boys is way above that of boys who are. A tiny procedure that no child remembers can save them from painful infections as a child and adult.

When my son was born September 2000 I specifically asked my family doctor if there was any medical reason to have him circumcised. His response was, NO. I also asked my brother who was born in 1983 if he wished for any reason that our parents had gone ahead and had him circumcised...his reply, no. He has never had any issues with infection nor has my son. Sure it may occur in some uncircumcised males but it's surely not something that happens often enough to justify the procedure when it is easily treated. Having your child circumcised is anymore nothing more than personal choice. Surely one is entitled to have it done but there is no medical benefit. Below is an article I found just now stating just that.

You could have just taught him how to keep it clean.

$1:
In 1975, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) stated in no uncertain terms that "there is no absolute medical indication for routine circumcision of the newborn." In 1983, the AAP and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) restated this position. In 1999 and again in 2005, the AAP again restated this position of equivocation.

There is no absolute medical indication for routine circumcision of the newborn.

To each their own, but I do have a few friends that for medical reasons had to have it done as adults, yee-ouch! Never heard of anybody who was done at birth having to have it "re-attatched" for the same reasons. I'm happy with my parents decision for me and mine for my son.

Here's the most egregious case of circumcision gone wrong, but there are plenty of others. It's not a no-risk operation. As for the child not remembering the pain - prove it. Just because something can't be remembered consciously doesn't mean it's not locked in our body memories.

$1:
David Reimer (August 22, 1965 – May 5, 2004) was a Canadian man who was born as a healthy male, but was sexually reassigned and raised as female after his penis was accidentally destroyed during circumcision.[1] Psychologist John Money oversaw the case and reported the reassignment as successful, and as evidence that gender identity is primarily learned. Academic sexologist Milton Diamond later reported that Reimer failed to identify as female since the age of 9 to 11,[2] and that he began living as male at age 15. Reimer later went public with his story to discourage similar medical practices. Eventually he committed suicide, due to suffering years of severe depression, financial instability and a troubled marriage.

What if your son isn't happy with your choice later on?
