It's not. Because I can see that there is no record of which paper ballot I write my X on. There is nothing on the ballot that makes it different from every other ballot. Therefore no one can ever know who I voted for, unless I tell them.

But they know exactly what you buy in which ever store, etc etc.
With the "models" they have, they can figure out what you would vote, using that information. Just sayin'.

They don't. I don't use 'rewards' cards. If I do, I use someone elses' card. I've never given my name out to make a retail purchase, (other than a car) and I typically use cash.

I know, I'm weird. I know that no one but me will protect my rights, and my right to privacy especially. If a retailer demands personal information for a purchase, I refuse. I'd walk away from the purchase if they insisted, but they never do.

My government gets the same treatment. They work for me. They don't get to tell me that I am to give up my right to vote anonymously.

Why the paranoia?

Who cares if your bank knows where you buy your groceries and gas?

It probabally doesn't matter if they do. But it's not just them by themselves. There are companies that buy and sell 'rewards' information, those business cards people put into enter 'draws'. . .phonebooks, and every bit of data they can get their hands on, and put it all together in order to market things to people. And who knows what else. A simple rule for modern times - if you get something for 'free' (Air Miles, Facebook) then *you* and your information are the commodity being sold.

It's not paranoia if it actually happens. I like to have some say in what happens to my personal information, so I vote with my $$ and opt out.

DrCaleb DrCaleb:
Dragon-Dancer Dragon-Dancer:
You could still do something like this by having the system generate a unique serial number at the time of voting that matches the id of the vote record. This would easily allow you to retrieve the same info but without the need for paper.

Look up the word 'Gerrymandering', if you are unfamiliar with it. Now, imagine a world where political parties could look up the identity of everyone who voted for their party. And cross that with Stats Can info, and the info from your in-store rewards card. And that's just the 'nice' scenario I can think of.

I won't trust anyone with my phone number these days, why would I trust someone to recored how I vote?

Heh, that process has been alive and well in Alberta provincial politics for as long as I've been alive. The PCs have adjusted the ridings around every major urban area to include large bits of rural Alberta since they know that's where their base is.

In any case I can see that paranoia is alive and well. It's up to you, I choose to be optimistic.

Did I mention I'm a Government of Alberta employee? Be optomistic all you like. I'm glad there are still some people out there innocent enough to remain so.

Myself, I'm a realist because I see terrabytes of personal information being folded, spindled, mutilated and correlated every day. But they still will never record who I vote for.

For many people, they don't need to. At least not here.

Companies like Facebook, who I deal with on a daily basis with their marketing programs, don't sell any personal information about people nor do most of these companies. They offer data and statistics to target your marketing.

In the end, who cares if you're counted as a statistic that likes to buy Oreo's and use your Air Miles card?

It's no different than your ISP monitoring your web traffic then reporting statistics on usage.
