So, maybe we should give up on the auto industry and get into a more hi-tech innovative product to manufacture in Canada.

I feel for the Conservative son this one. They gotta fork over the cash, though I don't think it's in their nature. And whne the auto industry lumbers on, still losing money, a couple of years down the road, the Conservatvies will take the blame. They should grow a pair and tell the industry to go pound sand. If the Liberals whine, tell them they are more than welcome to send in their own money.

It is pretty simple. I can not see why it is an issue. It is not the governments job to help out any private industry. End of story.

The problem is the fall-out from the failure of private industry affects everyone in the country including the government. They cannot afford NOT to take action of some kind. It is expected by the electorate.

Chapter 11, then we'll talk.

That should always be the gov. stance. if bailout is required for a critical industry after restructuring, then so be it.

It's up to business people to create industries not Canada.

I don't think he implied anything otherwise. Our economy could be doing things a lot more efficient and productive and profitable than auto-making. In the very near future, the vehicles humans ride in will be a great deal different than they are now. Let's get into THAT industry instead of riding the Titanic to the bottom.

Tell us what it is so we can get started on it then.

Make sure there is a huge market for it as well.

It will also need to produce at least 500 000 jobs plus other spin-off benefits.

So who is this "we" holding us back?

Canada has an auto industry? Name one company that isn't Headquatered in another country. Canada should invest in becoming an industry leader but the heyday for the car is over. Have them file and restructure but no amount of money will bring back the 1970's.

That's the whole point...no one knows...

If you have a better idea to get thousands and thousands of people back to work quickly then share with the rest of us.

If not I suggest you grudgingly support bail-outs and loans to the auto industry while pushing your government to support a solution for the long terms as well.

The federal government has been cutting back funding for the research and development of high tech innovative products that could be a boon for our nation's future while many industrialized nations are increasing their funding!
