MAC1767 MAC1767:
i know very little about you to have a view.

i want the national anthem every day, in our schools, i want my kids to learn it like i did.
if some people dont like that, well we live in Canada where it is ok to speak out.

i take it you are trying to become a "citizen", why is it taking so long, if you dont mind me asking.

Well, first of all, you have to be in the country for 1085 days. Everyday you leave, is not counted, so 3 years after landing is not true. I live 10 kms from a border with the us, and every day I cross that border, I am one day less in Canada. So legally, you cannot become a citizen untill you are in the country for 3 years.

I said in this thread that I do not want to take on citizenship before my parents are dead. Maybe my husband will, which will not make me lose my Dutch one if i take the test (I think that part got lost in patriotism too, btw.) since Holland doesn't allow dual citizenship.
Reason? If I want to take care of them when they become ill, I have to apply for a visa. That is so much paperwork (just like it was to get this visa, took over 2 years and 45 pages) while I think that is not necessary, and I will avoid.

One of my best friends is from England, he told me one day that the best way to cure the british snobbery in Canada would be to send them back to England for a few years to work. I believe it.

EB, you can STILL apply for a UK passport. You are still a UK citizen.

My kids are not Canadian, they are not born here. They will be when they turn 18.

I don't even know if there is such a thing as "British snobbery in Canada".

I do know that the 2 times I've been back in 15 years, I couldn't wait to get back home to Canada.

EyeBrock EyeBrock:
The best thing I ever did as an immigrant is take the 15 Canadian history courses I have done over the past 6 years.
I'm lucky in that my place of work encourages continuing education and they give me a chunk for tuition each year.

History is very interesting and I find Canadian history fascinating, especially as so much happened in the area where I live (southern Ontario).

My kids are Canadian and I haven’t renewed my UK passport since it expired 7 years ago.
My Canadian passport is bang up to date.

I have sworn allegiance to Canada and this is where I’ll stay and this is where I'll be buried. I’d also be in the first line-up to enlist if need be, if the CF would still want me!

Sure!!!
If they ever create an old-folks battalion. :)
I'll join in too, just to keep you company.

I'm aware of that, I just don't want to. The nice dark blue passport that Canada has given me suits me fine.
I didn't mind having to line up in the 'Non-EU' line for the two times I have been to the UK.
I also quite enjoyed saying "Canadian" in my Manchester accent when the UK immigration guy asked me my citizenship.

See, I'm very proud to be a Canadian. Otherwise I'd still be in the UK with a small fridge, a shitty diesel car and living in a country that has lost it's way.

Plus Canadian chicks are WAY hotter. British women are ok to practice on but I'd never marry one.

My Canadian wife is hot and the best!

Its funny to see how this thread turned into an immigration thread, while it has nothing to do with me being an immigrant or not. It's just a different opinion that I have (that more in this thread have mentioned thouhg) but since it is coming from me, it is a big issue...

Discrimination!

If I would not lose my Dutch citizenship, I would have NO issue taking on the Canadian one. But I do lose my Dutch one.

Not discrimination Brenda.
You just shot your credibility on all the threads. We all thought you wanted to be a Canadian, now we know where you stand.

Don't preach to us about our culture, our politics and our military when you have no intention of becoming a Canadian.
Stay Dutch if you want to, but don't preach to me about OUR National Anthem and if it should be sung or not. It's not your place to.

EYEBROCK,

question?

if YOU lived in another country, trying to make a living, while keeping ties to your home country, and you sent your kids to school, would you like it if they wanted your kids to sing a national anthem?

i want my kids to sing it, i want everyone to sing it, but if they dont want to you cant force them to,nobody can.
