What did they think HD was for? Providing a better product, or squeezing more of it into the bandwidth available? Morons.

Yeah its a major problem. To get more HD channels the stupid tv providers are reducing the quality.

What the hell is the point?

I'm on Bell ExpressVu HD...and the quality is really beginning to lack.

Hell, I'm just on cable and I can see the compression artifacts. Discovery (AKA the "technology is good, technology is your friend, bow down and worship the god that is technology" channel) and A&E, as the article says, are particularly bad.

It has nothing to do with CRT. It's the amount of info they are able to send down the pipeline for HD programs.

Same here. I find certain channels are pretty consistent. Watching a Raptor game or Jays game on Sportsnet HD or The Score HD is pretty consistent. TSN has very good signals. CBC is hit and miss. Sometimes it looks brilliant watching a hockey game, other times, you see jaggy lines.

Discovery used to be top notch but it has been slipping recently. CTV is hit and miss too.

I can finally buy a 27" TV for $129, and get 300 channels for $30 per month....

why should I upgrade?

While the HD quality has somewhat diminished, I still find HD picture to be far better and more detailed than SDTV, plus you get to watch 16:9 aspect instead of 4:3. More picture. It's great when watching hockey and you can actually see a Defenseman trailing the play for a one timer. Wouldn't ever go back to SDTV. However, if you're on a budget, SDTV is very cheap so why not?

Oh and if you're a sound guy then you will be blown away too. Much better over an HD signal or however it works.

My free Over-the-air ATSC CBC HD channel looks amazing, much better than the CBC HD on my parents cable. The OTA signal is not "crunched", too bad there wasn't more OTA channels though, CBC is pretty much all i can get in Vancouver.
