Still, when the time comes for me to upgrade to a larger vehicle, I'll be moving to a TDI SUV (like the Audi Q7 maybe)

If you buy a Q7, please don't come crying to me about how you pay too much taxes and raising the minimum wage will make your venti latte cost a bit more. Actually I wish you'd cut that out even when you're driving your Jetta. A Q7 starts at over 50k and the diesel version has gotta be a lot more.

My coffee drinking habits (I don't drink coffee at all) are not the reason I don't support raising minimum wages.

As I have explained on several occasions, I worked at minimum wage here in Alberta for almost a decade, and a 25 cent increase here and a 25 cent increase there never made an appreciable change in my standard of living - education and job training did.

That's why I believe that money spent on increasing minimum wage would be better spent by increasing grants for people to take training courses, learning a trade, or getting a degree.

I also feel that minimum wage jobs are not meant to be a lifelong career - just a place to gain experience (for youth) or a place to wind down one's life to supplement income (seniors).

As for the TDI Q7 (nicely equipped is the euphemism I believe) starts at about $62,000 or so. That's why I said if a car company made a hybrid or diesel minivan, I'd buy that instead. However, no one does, and at some point in the future I will need a vehicle with third row seating. My choices are either a SUV or minivan and I don't really care which one - I just want the most fuel efficient model. My preference is towards the BlueTech TDI though, because not only is it incredibly fuel-efficient, it also emits less CO2 than gasoline powered engines the same size.

Just get a pickup. you can throw the extra kids in the box utilizing the tie-down points as the anchors for a restraining system.

A Tuareg would be a bit cheaper. Are you planning to breed lots of babies that a 5 passenger one won't do?

I don't want to start the min wage debate again (well unless you want to) but in BC it was just raised $2.25 in steps by next May. That's a good kick in the pants. Of course the usual whiners went on about how this was to drastic, and we'd all go broke. But if it had been raised on an incremental basis it wouldn't have come as such a shock. In Vancouver the low income cutoff for a single person working full time is $11.11. The min wage should be set at that and increased as the LIC increases. (Or decreases if we have another recession.)

I agree totally on providing training. But not everybody can work at jobs that require it, mostly because there aren't enough of them, and because we need the unskilled jobs to be done as well. Also, money spent on training would be govt money, ie ours, while money spent on wages is employer money. I didn't see the employers in BC spending skads on training when we had the lowest min wage in the country. Especially since their business doesn't require any or many skilled workers.

I'd be on a lot less about min wage if we drastically reduced immigration, including all those temporary permits, to let the market settle what a job is worth. But as long as you flood the labor market with people that have to take any job to survive, it will always depress wages. So we have to at least set a minimum.

You never know what you are going to find in shopping carts at Wal-Mart, and you should be prepared with extra seating.
