Don't think Saudi Arabia cares if it is common law or not. He is her husband which means he owns her.

common law by whose law ?

I'd be surprised if Saudi Arabia recognizes some form of common law;
considering 2 unmarried people arent allowed to be in the same room
without a chaperon.........

p.s. There are thousands of women in this kind of position,
not just this one.

Brenda Brenda:
She married the guy voluntarily. She had kids with him voluntarily. She went to S-A voluntarily. What is slavery about that?

Married? common law is not quite the same in Saudi

I read that... I thought it was strange I couldnt find a wedding date in the story...

She should just shut up and go. Yes, she has to leave her kids behind. But SHE is free to go.

Anyone who puts themselves in this position should be left out to dry. It's fairly common knowledge how Saudis treat women and children, this woman obviously never read or saw or even heard of the movie Not Without My Daughter.

That's it. I'm calling the nearest Canadian government office in my vicinity and demanding 300,000.00 be payed to me or I'm staying here. No, ifs ands or buts.(it's worth a try)

In Canada they could be common law, but that doesn't mean they didn't get married religiously (which isn't recognized by Canada)
$1:
To create a religious contract between them, it is sufficient that a man and a woman indicate an intention to marry each other and recite the requisite words in front of a Muslim priest

They just have to say a few words in front of a Imam and and they are married in the eyes of any Islamic country.

Why would we pay? She made the choice to marry a Saudi, she gave up her rights as a person.

I agree. She left the land of milk and honey to go to the land of sand and oil (and gender oppression). Her bad, so sad, too bad. :wink:
