And how exactly does giving people EI after working only 9 weeks as opposed to the 12 or 14 that it is now stimulate the economy? I'm in over my head here, pease help with this one.
People who have the least amount of money turn very quickly to credit with high interest rates. That's where the stimulus needs to happen.
Why wouldn't we concentrate instead on creating jobs so that they can earn a living to pay those cards off? You see the problem with this whole "more people on EI" thing is that someone has to pay for it. Either you tax the corporations who in turn lay people off to make up for the loss in profits or we tax high income earners who are pretty much the top of the food chain, they in turn spend less which also has the same effect; less spending, less jobs. It's kind of a vicious cycle.
The money that would go to people who worked only 9 weeks would be better spent on any number of initiatives be them corprate tax cuts as favored by Conservatives or government spending on socail programs such as day care as favored by the Liberals and / or NDP. Both would create jobs, both would help enable people with maxed out credit cards to get steady pay checks. Pick your flavour, left or right, there are better ways to stimulate the economy than Iggys's proposal.
