The health unit is discussing the situation with its legal team, but there are also political complications — it’s run by Natives squatting on contentious provincial government land.

I know what ya mean. These guys are breaking the law, which is there to protect us against deadly germs in our meat supply and it can't happen anywhere except on unregistered outlets.

I am waiting for some native child to get sick from eating a bad burger at this place and then the chief screaming that the Federal government is to blame for allowing this joint to serve bad beef. Of course all of the Aboriginal nations will jump on board and scream for more money.

Why wait? I am sure there is national burger chain somewhere (prob in the States) that has already poisoned someone. If that's what they want to do, why wait around till someone gets sick at this place?

Uh, the point of the article you linked describes how the US government took immediate action (most likely with the cooperation of the company that produced the contaminated meat) upon discovery of the problem to prevent people from getting sick.

This is a situation where individuals are operating a business both the individuals and the government are fully aware of the health risks and unsanitary conditions, only for the government to delay proper action about it because of "political concerns".

Comparing apples and oranges, no?

This is utterly ridiculous, last July in Oshawa bylaw officers shut down a kids lemonade stand because he didn't have insurance and a licence. In Simcoe they can't do anything about an illegal restaurant with no electricity, freezers or refrigerators and are unable to determine the origin of water used on site as there is no running water available. The only toilet facilities are two port-a-johns beside an adjoining smoke shack. And why can't they do anything after it reopened after being previously shut down in July?....It’s run by Natives squatting on contentious provincial government land and the owners have refused to allow health inspectors back on site. It's totally ridiculous that no government official can manage to shut this place down simply because they can't get the owners to let them in!

Uh, my point was the concept of "bigger fish to fry." This burger joint is illegal, but legal outfits poison quite a few each year. Perhaps worrying about burgers from cattle "finished" knee deep in their own shit and kept "healthy" with antibiotics is more important than one tipi (oh my God...Indians again...) selling burgers.
