30 - 80 million feral cats in the US--that's actually the most surprising number I found. Wow. It's been known for a while that cats kill a lot of birds and rodents. Probably the casue of the early symbiosis of cats and humans.
I've always found that nail clipping helps. Just that last 2mm of hyper-sharp claw--keep that down and their kill ratio drps precipitously. And keepr your cats neutered to prevent raising the stray population.
As opposed to nail clipping I have a Remington air rifle that handles the local cat problem most effectively. The little creeps come into my yard to bother my chicken, I shoot them, bag them, and toss them in the trash and never see them again.

legal in 1991.
