I would say he was unqualified but if he managed to get from his riding to Ottawa every week in a horse & buggy, I'd say he's more than capable. I'd also trust an Amish MP far more than another lawyer from Quebec.

Pseudonym Pseudonym: Would an Amish man volunteer for the position, get elected, and perform suitably in the position? Judge the man by his actions. If he isn't working well, fire him. Otherwise, the time to raise such objections was prior to his appointment. Please tell me how many members of the present government are literal Creationists. I'd be glad to start a petition to have them removed because of mental defect. At the very least, place them in positions where religious bias cannot possibly be considered an influence in day to day operations.

Probably as many who are Muslim, Hindu or Native Indians. poquas poquas: It’s time to remove the radical Reform religious element from the Conservative Party. Day is another perfect example of why. Day bragged about his beliefs and how it guided his daily life. I don’t want anyone’s interpretation of their belief in or "relationship" with God impacting my life. Suck it up, buttercup. You have no say in what the party does. $1: Under section 15 of the Charter, each individual is equal before and under the law without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

hurley_108 hurley_108: Day was a fool. WAS????? Day was the reason I began to question my support for the entire party. Harper was the reason I abandoned them.

Ok, what if that same Amish Minister tried to take a job as a bus driver? If his religious views interfere with the execution of his position then how can he hold that job?
Having a creationist at the helm, even if elected, means he is fundamentally at odds with his job. It is insidious by nature but falls short of removing the post outright.

ridenrain ridenrain: You have no say in what the party does. After more than thirty five years of consistantly voting PC, THAT'S the Conservative Party I've begun to know! The best part is that you're wrong. I may not vote for anyone else at the moment, but you can be sure I will not support the party as it exists any longer.

I'm an old school Reform supporter so I really don't care about you're sad pining for the halcyon days of Joe Clark and his blue Liberals. Good ridance, you soft fence-sitter. You guys are advocating that a man lose his job because of his religion and that's a textbook definition of descrimination. This story is done.

No, I say in this case the man's religion is a textbook case of a delusional character.
A few more of these whackos coming out of the closet will seal the Harper governments future and force the party to take a good hard look at itself.
As you have described yourself as an "old school Reform supporter" I think your right. This story is done. You need some professional help in person, not on a public forum.

Yes, but the same Amish minister couldn't take such a job, because it would be opposed to his religious beliefs. He wouldn't have a driver's license, for one thing. There is no such fundamental contradiction in this case. If the man believes God created the world from a Giant Easter Egg, we could have a problem, but as it stands, I am unaware of an instance of him pushing an unscientific viewpoint on others or otherwise failing in his duties.
