Brenda Brenda: martin14 martin14: Brenda Brenda: Yes.
And the kids should be locked up. or how about we lock up the dog and put the kids down ??? seems like a better solution.... And what kind of a life would the dog have then? If, (and it is speculation what snookums mentioned) that dog would be "teased" like that, and bite, it would never be able to get back to its normal behaviour. It would always have a problem trusting kids, and the only way a dog can show that, is by biting. I am sorry, but it is looking for trouble if you don't put it down. A pet is NEVER worth more than a child.
Well, the dog in question (it did happened, I know the dog), was not "teased" - that was abuse (he became blind in one eye with the force of the rock that hit the side of his head, and has major problems walking because his pads on one of his paws were completely burned). I guess we don't have the same definition of "teasing"..
Anyway, he wasn't put down because the parents caught the kids hurting the dog. He was sent to a rescue and was adopted - by a family with teenagers (about the same age as the kids who abused him). He has adapted so well, he's the best dog someone could know - no incident whatsoever and it has been over 5 years.
I understand that it's not all dogs that turn out like that, especially in case of abuse. In that case, the best thing to do is to put it down, but you just can't generalize.
Anyway, as I said, ALL dogs (small or big) should be treated as a loaded gun - even the most docile ones. Never EVER leave a child for 1 second with a dog - you're just asking for trouble

i guess abuse was the word I was looking for, but couldn't find... Hence the "".
I agree with you that children should not be left alone with any dog. When I was bitten, I was 15, so not really a kid. I came down the stairs (this was a big dog, larger than I am...), and there was nothing that indicated it was about to happen. It scared the shit out of me, and autopsy showed he had a brain tumor. It was a beautiful dog though...
I have had dogs my self, after that, and my parents still have dogs like these...
I just remember I have been bitten in my nose by a teckel too (the parents of my friends were around, but that stupid dog bit anyway. I was 7 or something )

Robair Robair: Lavics Lavics: What makes you say that I cant value my dogs life more than yours ? Didn't say you can't. You can do whatever you want. Of course, if you value your rotties life more than that little girl's, it is my opinion that you should be committed, and then your dog should be destroyed.
Because I would value the life of my kids so much, there is not a chance in hell I would let them play UNSUPERVISED in someone else's backyard with a tied dog close by. That doesn't mean the little girl deserved to be bitten.
Kids ARE stupid (I know, I was one!) and what they think might be OK for them can be seen as a threat by a dog. We don't know what happened and probably never will - the dog will probably be put down and that's that.

Oh wow - beautiful dog!!!
Yeah, brain tumours could probably do that to a dog - sorry to hear that you had to be the recipient of such a reaction though..
If we can put down dogs that bite, the population of "balloon dogs" would dramatically decreased. I don't know how many times I got bitten by those f*cking balloon dogs when I was a kid - because they don't do much damage, people think it's funny. I don't know but a pissed off "Shit zu" biting on a kid's tender bottom is not very funny for the kid in question

We call dogs vicious because when the big ones bite they cause a lot of damage.
I have a Rotti - Shepherd Cross and he weighs in around 120lbs he has lots of energy and likes to play, but lets face it, at that weight it would take a lot to stop him if he got pissed.
I t is important to spend time with dogs playing walking jogging a well loved dog for the most part is well behaved.
There are a lot owners out there who should be put down with the bad dogs that they raise. Not all owners of biting dogs are bad but dogs are animals with very primal instincts and they dont communicate very well so they do it with their mouths. Not all dogs are like lassie.

Brenda Brenda: ROTFL I hate those small dogs... I guess that was the result of that stupid biting teckel... Everything that size is not a dog, but a rat, imo My mil has a "Pekinees" That is not a dog, that is a floormop!
MY EYES!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god, that's a ugly mop
Yeah, "balloon dogs" are just not dogs - I think something went wrong in the evolution process Stuck between a rat, a cat and a dog..
When I was 13, I had to go door to door to sell stupid things for school (I think it was chocolate). I got to one house and I rang the door bell. Well, what I didn't know was that there was a bichon frisé living in that house who would become really agressive when he heard the door bell. When the woman opened the door, the thing came out flying, literally. I backed off a little so it landed right on his face, then proceeded to try to bite my leg. Fortunately, it only got my pants. The woman was standing there, laughing her ass off, and kept saying "oh look at Milou, he's trying to be all tough". No shit!!!!! Was I ever glad that it wasn't a 50lbs dog

Brenda Brenda: Yes.
And the kids should be locked up.
Yes in their own yard!
What the hell is a five year old doing in the neighbors yard unattended if she felt the dog was so dangerous.
I had a kid come into my yard and drop a rock on my dogs head. He did what would be natural and snapped at what hurt him. The dog is not going to give a shit what hit him, he was sleeping and gets ripped across the muzzle with a rock. The parents wanted me to put the dog down and I told them that if they were lucky I wouldn't sue them. The dog was a pure bred and needed stitches.

The dog was in the owners backyard on a chain.
after the dog bit the little girl, the son of the owner (about same age as the girl) could stop the dog, a child would NOT be able to that when the dog indeed was wild.
The dog is 10 years old, that is old for a dog that size.
My opinion is, let the dog enjoy the little bit of time he has left...and keep kids away from him.
Mom is a big mouth..but indeed where was she?
Why was the girl within chainlength of the dog?

$1: Delisle administrator Mark Dubkowski said the dog was licensed, was chained in its own yard and had no history of attacks.
That mom should be talking familly and childrens services as to why her kid was abandoned.
It is an offence to leave kids unattended......
