In Calgary we started sex ED in elementary school, and I also know that there were parts of that where the boys and girls were taken to separate rooms. I would imagine that the girls were talked to about getting their periods, but I don't know for sure because I didn't get to go to the girls education room. I agree though, what if a girl has only a sigle father? I don't think he is an authority on that. The child should be eductaed by someone, a female, that understands the personal nature of that comming of age.
I know I had great perents, but my parents were 40 years older than me and came from a time that maybe that sort of education at home wasn't a priority. If people educate their children on their own that is fantastic. We still need to take care of the children that don't get that education at home.

Single fathers can do research on the internet and at the library, just as single moms have done for ages for their sons. Parenting is not only feeding your kid and making sure it is at school on time...

I also 100% agree with you on all of your points. The problem is not all parents educate themselves, they should but lots don't. I think it is fantastic that you and your family do, that means you are a great parent. But not all parents are.

If you want your kids (as a teacher) to practice, all the best to the teacher, but just don't make them buy condoms if they are not ready... They are probably embarrassed enough by sex-ed...

I agree, they should not be required to buy condoms.

Brenda Brenda: MacDonaill MacDonaill: Most parents are not able to teach kids everything they need to know about sex, STDs and pregnancy. Why? Because they don't have the know-how. Most people in general don't know as much as they think they do about STD's, safer sex and pregnancy. If we want all kids to have access to the same quality information on these subjects, it has to be done at school. You just recounted how your parents were unable to teach you about sex, and that you got all the info at school. It's no different today, internet or not.

I don't think I said I got the info at school... My biggest complaint about the sex-ed I got from my parents, was that it was too little too late. I was already sexually active when they tried to talk to me. That is why I started it the day my kids were born, basicly. There is no way in the world I would go to my parents to talk to them about it. My kids already do. I agree with you that sex ed needs to be taught at school, there is no doubt about it. BUT... it is not a one time thing, and kids should not be required to buy condoms at the local pharmacy with their own money.

Brenda Brenda: Bibbi Bibbi: I don't need stats. Sexual education would have NEVER been acceptable in any province, if studies proved that it was being properly done in the home by parents. And you know for sure it isn't? Well, I learned sex from my partner. My sister learned sex from a friend who was a nurse. None of my friends learned sex from their parents either. In a high school sex education class I attended there were still basic questions being asked about sex, so, those students did not learn anything from their parents either. One teacher told me that he learned more about sex from the experience of his students brought up in sex education class, than he did from his parents. Another student said that she learned sex from porn video disks and she had a considerable collection. So, kids are learning about sex, but it is definitely NOT from their parents.

Soooo... because ALLLLL the people you know had shitty parents, EVERY parent is shitty when it comes to sex ed?

I think I already said, that studies have shown that parents are NOT teaching sex education to their children. I read them several years ago, when it was an issue that was being decided in various school systems. They formed part of the basis for making the decision for sex ed in the schools.
Now, I am not really that motivated to spend time to do your homework. They are likely in books, or old newspapers, if you are keen.
By the way, are you implying that you and all your friends learned all about sex from their parents? I notice that you did NOT say that.

MY homework? You push opinion to be fact... Prove it! I am not implying anything. Get your facts straight.
