Brenda Brenda:

Annette Pollock has a grandson at the school and she also counts herself as among those upset about the kids' inability to sing the national anthem daily inside the classroom.

"He goes to hockey. It's pretty bad when you have to wait for hockey to teach him O Canada instead of in the schools," she said of her grandson.

OMG woman, overreact much?
They are not singing it every day anymore, it's not banned!

My kids don't sing O Canada every day either in school. I don't see why that is necessary anyway. They don't pray in school either. I bet they learn the anthem, but it is not a part of the "daily routine", and excuse me, having an 11 year old saying that "it reminds me of the troups that are all out there"... Is that REALLY what you want the anthem to be?

When that 11 year olds cousin was killed in Afghanistan, its alright in my books for her to say that.

What could possibly be offensive about O Canada?

God

That's the only thing I could think of as well.

If it is the mention of God in the anthem then they should do what my teachers did when I was a kid. When it came time to read the bible and say the lords prayer, anyone who didn't want to take part left the room. Why should we accomodate the minority by cancelling the daily anthem, let the pansies sit in the hallway for five minutes.

What I was responding to, was "gramma", who thought it was a disgrace that "her grandkid has to learn the Anthem at hockeypractice" now. THAT is utter bullshit. They just don't sing it EVERYDAY anymore. It is not completely banned.

I don't think it is healthy for an 11 year old, or any kid for that matter, to think about adult business every day. The military, soldiers, war and all the politics are adult matters, that kids brains cannot gasp the way we do.

I hear you on the overreaction bit, but perhaps as adults and educators we need to detract from that line of thinking when it comes to children and focus on the feelings of patriotism a national anthem should inspire.
My son is 9 and he doesn't think of troops in the field every time he hears the anthem.

Which is EXACTLY what I mean, thank you.

Disgusting,have they no pride?

And they call us Albertans seperatists. Chew on this N.B.

Should find a N.B. forum and post that video.

R=UP

THAT is a moment I will never forget. THAT is the kind of pride that should be displayed EVERY time that anthem is sang, and yes, should be taught at school.

Enough bullshit already.

I didnt learn the English bits until much later.

What is so discouraging is the fact that this is just the tip of the septic field.
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole damned teaching staff was a pack of politically frustrated lefties who try to indoctrinate their students their views.
Teachers wield a great deal of power and influence and they need a tight rein, and this principal is exactly the last person I'd want to see in a school
