RUEZ RUEZ: mtpockets mtpockets: Making what shit up? Do your own damned research. If there's something I'm stating and you don't agree, show me the errors of my words. Otherwise, back to your corner.
Actually it's the responsibility of the person making the claim to back it up with proof. Not the people he's making the claim to. Since you've refused to do that you are nothing more than a liar. Oh really? So if I told you your house was on fire you would want proof before running to see if it was true? I might be telling the truth Ruez....better run. I challenge you to prove me wrong on anything I've stated so far. When I say Newfoundland has given more to Canada than they can repay...I bloody well mean it. We have been used to the point of no return. Starting with the fishery, right through to Churchill Falls, and now the clawbacks in the oil industry. Get your grubby hands off our resources, let us gain a financial foothold and let us start contributing to this country in a meaningful way or face the music.

Actually if my house is on fire, the smoke and flames are proof enough. Where are your smoke and flames?

lily lily: mtpockets mtpockets: mtpockets mtpockets: Man, this country has taken more out of Newfoundland than you'll ever be able to repay. Do tell? Look it up. Just as I thought, you're making this shit up as you go along and you can't back it up. Are you done wetting your pants yet?
Making what shit up? Do your own damned research. Being attacked by a nest of vipers on CKA is not even going to draw a bead of sweat from my brow.
hmmm.... not classy.... sort of maybe tasteful.... but kinda funny, in a regional sort of way.
Wasn't meant to be...leaves a bitter taste...absolutely funny.

mtpockets mtpockets: lily lily: Is there such a thing as a tasteful classy newfie joke?
If so, it's probably not very funny. Sure there are. And if you had a real sense of humour I'd tell you one. But the ones you like depict Newfoundlanders in a negative light, right? Sorry, yeah, those are tasteless and not very classy at all. Usually told by dimwitted individuals who like to boost their self-esteem. You talking about the Caper's?

mtpockets mtpockets: Brenda Brenda: Every fishing country has quota. Didn't you know that? Holland does, Norway does, Iceland does. Just to make sure we don't fish our oceans empty. The time of the big fish are gone why? Because of overfishing.... Now you're getting it.$1: Nor did you learn anything about the lumberindustry of BC, right? Sorry to burst your bubble, but I think kids learn more about their COUNTRY than you think... I might have learned about the lumber industry in BC but I'm not sure if the kids today are. I'd have to check. I'd be surprised if they were. Maybe a short statistic on exports or something of that nature. Good, you are gonna need it here, even when it is done tasteless A good joke with class and taste is very funny at times. However, jokes that strike at the heart of a people or their land or their way of life is not funny. I don't belittle other people and I expect the same in return. It's not that hard really. Some on this site should try it sometime. You might get a little more respect. The best jokes are made by people that can laugh about it themselves. It takes a sense of humour to do that. People make jokes here about immigrants all the time. You would get more respect if you grew a sense of humour

You would get more respect if you grew a sense of humour Most of the newfie jokes are actually translations of the jokes the French make of the Belgiums. There are a lot of redneck jokes that are the same too, just replace 'newfie' with 'redneck'. Probably every county/province/state/region has these same jokes about some other county/province/state/region. Newfoundlanders probably joke about the people that live on St-Pierre and Miquelon Islands.

Those Belgians are too stupid to understand them anyway (and that is exactly what they say about us too! ) Ya know what... I just can't stand people without a sense of humour. If you can't laugh about yourself, then what can you laugh about?

If you can't laugh about yourself, then what can you laugh about? I'm French Canadian, of course I can laugh about myself. If not I would've gone on a shooting rampage years ago. But I don't own a gun so it would probably have been a poutine rampage. When I lived in NS, other kids would call me a frog. So I carefully explained to them exactly what that meant (the English would call the French frogs because they ate frog legs). I was not French and I did not eat frog legs. So Frog was inverted to Gorf and the name stuck. One other thing, I love the Belgians. They know how to drink (great beer) and they really know how to eat. Sorry, can't say anything about the Dutch. You're probably the only Dutch I know.

I bunked with a caper up north one summer and him and the newf(who was nicknamed Newf) used to go at it like cats and dogs.I heard names like "cod gobbler" and a few others unfit to print bandied about whenever they were in the same space. They were great friends but lived each moment to out do the other.
I never once saw them mad at each other allthough some of the practical jokes they played on each other were worth a beating.
EDIT-and our consultant was french so the newf brought him a little porcelain frog as a gift and he carried that thing with him everywhere.

You know what Brenda neither can I. But your sense of humour and mine are so wide apart we'll never see eye to eye. I'm sorry if I don't come across as the stereotypical, straight out of the fishing boat Newfie. Surprise, surprise...the money Canada threw at our education system has done it's job and now you have to deal with a wiser, more knowledgeable Newfoundlander who will not put up with the status quo. Welcome to the new and improved version with the sharpest Newfie at the helm...Danny Williams.
