Know we know why harper prorogued parliament for 2 months...cabinet had to gather around is piano and rehearse the new version.
"Thou dost" line is cumbersome to sing and nobody likes talking like that anyway. I think the word "command" in this line is used in a more nuanced way, such as "possess" e.g. "The Roughriders command an impressive lead going into the 4th quarter."
For all the bru-ha-ha the political right caused the last time this issue popped up in the press a few years ago, its surprising that they came up with idea this time around. Especially after Harper crowed over the Olympics insiring new-found patriotism.
Red Herring issue.
If we're going to change it, we should build the French version, its much more insiring: it talks about carrying the sword, an epic history of brilliant exploits, valour in trying times protecting homes and rights, etc.
Here are all the historic versions of O canada, both song and poem over the years, including a literal translation of the French version (but missing a line!)
