I wont disagree with that, but realtions have been souring recently and like I said the lack of US support in this case also would be more worrying.

Harper's Conservatives have nothing but contempt for the UN, as evidenced by the comments of many Conservative supporters about the UN on this site, for example. So we shouldn't be all that surprised when our attempts to get a seat in the powerful arm of the UN was rebuffed.

Blaming Iggy was just incredibly petty. The Conservatives have been in power for several years now and yet they still act like the official Opposition--blaming everything on the other parties. Bush league stuff. Almost as bush league as the "We're taking our ball and going home" response to the loss.

Blaming Iggy was silly and petty.

Even the Tories eventually realised that, but Iggy was being partisan and petty prior to the vote. Two wrongs don't make a right but the Liberals haven't looked good out of this either.
It's just another example of the second-hand car sales tactics that are prevalent on both sides of the House.

That said Harper has since come out and acknowledged the real reasons for our getting edged out by Portugal. Cannon needs a kick up the arse.
Even Harper saw that Canadians were well aware of the real issues at play and it wasn’t just another petty partisan point of debate.

It was down to the various blocs, the EU, the Islamic bloc and the UAE all played their part, although I think Canada's support for Israel over-shadowed our current spat with the UAE. Iggy and the UAE didn't help but we can't blame either of them, they just stoked the fire a bit more.

Of course Harper is pissed off we didn't get an SC seat, I would have liked to see that but not at the cost of joining the Jew-haters and further funding corrupt African regimes.

The way it all played out, the lies and the double-dealing make the loss of face more bearable. To lose because of global petty politics, anti-Semitism and dis-enfranchised African despots who are pissed we are not funding their next BMW fleet is nothing to be ashamed of.

On the UN, I agree, most Tories have contempt for that Org, and for good reason Zip.

I can't see anything good coming out of there these days. Please do educate me on the positive role of the current UN as I'm just not seeing it. We haven't committed large scale assets to the UN for 20 years and we have been eclipsed since the late 1980's as peacekeepers by such nations as Bangladesh, Fiji, Nigeria and Pakistan. They see peacekeeping as a way to make money.

Political leverage mate, everybody uses it all the time. Just politics, nothing personal. Stop crying fowl if someone other than you uses it for once.

Sorry DD, but when a 'friendly' nation actively sabotages our goals, it does become personal.

Agreed.

Also agreed.

Funny, the Canadians for Obama website hasnt commented yet, maybe they
havent heard yet. :)

I encourage all our American friends to help us out and vote Republican in November.

Huh? That would be, OVERWHELMINGLY, a minority position among Canadians.

Yea, I have to agree with Lemmy. I've not seen too much coming from the Republican camp that cheers me up recently. I think the US right is in total disarray and has been hijacked by nutters.

But Martin is right, Obama let us down because we don't matter to him. Just like he let the Limeys down over the Falklands. He's too busy placating his enemies that he's forgetting who the US's real mates are.

I don't have much time for the UN either. Unlike the Conservatives however, I don't seek executive membership in organizations I don't like.

I should say that I have no time for the UN General Assembly. The UN does have some useful arms--the WHO, for example and other parts that mostly busy themselves with setting international standards and gathering intelligence and statistics at a global level.

I don't agree that Canada lost because of "petty politics." In the final analysis, Canada is not committed to the UN, and everyone knows it.

I'd say the fact that we are the 7th largest financial contributor to the UN shows how committed we are Zip.

Maybe it's time to revisit our financial contributions to this corrupt organization.

Ya it's the same usual suspects griping as usual. If they need to see what good the UN they could open their eyes and see child mortality rates dropping but then that would oppose their world view and i suppose we can't have that...

Example:

http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_t ... ecade.html

All the finger pointing makes Canada look like a bunch of amatures. Time to put a cork in it and sort that sh*t out.

Correct and thanks for a rationale view. Canada should be proud to be a big contributor instead of acting like sore losers, a lot of lives are saved, shelter provided, hungry mouths are feds and a lot of other good is done thorugh the UN.
