When I was in a local drugstore just after swine flu hit the media, I overheard someone asking at the pharmacy where the masks are and the pharamacist said they were waiting for another delivery and that they could barely keep up with demand, yet the condom racks never seem empty...

Actually if those numbers are correct it is an amazing record. Porn stars may "get around" but obviously the majority protect themselves.

The thing is, when people contract HIV it isn't an immediate death sentence. Many live 15 - 20 years, and with each new generation of drugs their life expectancy gets longer. However, while most people who contract influenza never get more than a cough and a slight fever, some who contract it can die within days.
