Streaker Streaker:

There's a distinction to be made between healthy patriotism and meaningless displays of forced jingoism.

Just out of curiosity Streaker what does singing the anthem in school have to do with jingoism?

Correct me if im wrong but isn't jingoism the expression of extreme patriotism through agressive foreign policy? Can't see the connection here.

What we're doing in A-stan is aggressive, and it's supported by the same jingoists who have freaked out over this story and sent hostile e-mails to this principal.

The connection is very easy to see.

How does singing the national anthem in school have ANYTHING to do with A-stan? You can be a proud CDN, who wants the anthem to be sung in school without supporting the mission you know.

Talk about completely twisting something around just to support your political agenda.

I think this media attention is good.

I want O Canada re-implemented in schools NATION-WIDE.

Maybe I will get to see it happen while I'm still in school after all! :)

Nothing at all, but the reaction to this story here on this board is very telling.

Telling of what? That SOME of the people who support the anthem being sung also support the mission? What about the others?

I'll be honest here I can't tell where you are/were trying to go with this.

I agree with SigPig.

For example, I don't support the A-Stan mission.

But I still want O Canada implemented in schools daily.

If I had my way, I'd have students singing it in French and English everyday until they graduated from High School.

Like Kim Jong Ill has his people and their version of "Patriotism"? Like the USSR had and their allegiance to the state?

Patriotism is great. I have defended Canada against all comers while traveling abroad but "forcing" people to sing the anthem isn't great either. Do the english sing "God save the Queen" before every school day? No, yet they are one of the most patriotic people around.

The same ideology behind that is the same ideology behind saying religious prayers every day as a means to install religion in people.

Lets celebrate our achievements and culture but lets not force it lest we cheapen it and defeat the purpose we do it.
