What do you mean all of a sudden? This is an ongoing policy, but somebody with space to fill is making an issue out of it.

It's actually law, not policy....and while I know it's ongoing, what stirred the pot? How did this come on the radar of the media now and never in the past?

Exactly, it's law, has been for some time.

For the second part, answer your own question.

BeaverFever BeaverFever:
Honestly, in a democracy, people should be free to be ungrateful assholes. Forcing them to participate in a ritual whose meaning is completely lost on them doesn't honour the veterans or anyone else and doesn't right any wrongs. At the end of the day, these people are going to believe what they believe and forced participation isn't going to change that.

It's no different than forcing someone to say "I love you"...someone who says it against their will isn't in any way similar to someone who says it because they actually feel it. And the coercion probably guarantees that they never will beleive it.

I agree. I'll be going as usual on Sunday and I went last Sunday.

I don't think people should be forced to go but I do think that the CF's role in our Nation should be taught at school and the citizenship test should put the sacrifices our vets have made front-and-centre.

Too many new 'Canadians' don't give a fuck about what happened in Canada and to Canadians before they landed at the airport.

You've got nothing to back up your assertion tho.

Or fell out of the womb.

Lots of young Canadians, born and raised in Canada, could care less about Remembrance Day.

They are too far removed from the incident to relate or care about it.

I call bullshit here.

For whatever reason this has turned into a dump on immigrants thread and your decision to hop in the bandwagon without facts is particularly ironic given the ire you show on the comparable dump on the cops threads that show up from time to time.

Eyebrock Eyebrock:
The rush to judge is very illuminating.

As I said earlier, Esquimalt has a population if around 16000 and I bet about 14000 of those won't be at the cenotaph this Sunday.

Guess I'll hop on the knee jerk immigrants don't give a shit about Canada bandwagon and guess those 14000 are immigrants.

Unbelievable.

My assertion is that we don't know if any parents kept their kids out of the ceremony or if they were immigrants or native born. All we've been told is that the schools have a policy of allowing this. You've just proven my assertion that you don't know. I win.

Call bullshit all you want, it's happening all around you.

Did second generation Canadians stand up and demand we stop having Christmas concerts?

Did second generation Canadians claim they were offended by Halloween/Easter?

Are second generation Canadians asking governments to fund all sorts of religious schools?

Our Canadian culture is a set of moving goal posts. We change with the wind and any request to accommodate another newcomer to Canada.

Canada was built on a specific set of values and traditions that we continually erode in the name of accommodation. That said, it's those values and traditions that made this Country a destination for those looking for a better life.

The only religion that I heard about complaining about Christmas were Jews, likely long term Canadians. The Sikhs love Christmas. Never heard about Muslims being against it either. Same with Easter.

Halloween - the only ones that seem to be against that are Jehovah's Witnesses and other Christian derived sects. Ie again, likely long term Canadians. Can you point to one instance of immigrants being against Halloween?

In BC they fund all sorts of religious and other private schools at 50 cents to the dollar. Haven't heard any sort of to that involved immigrants. Again, Jewish and Christian schools would be the main beneficiaries of this.

Actually a lot of the fuss seems to be by native born, Christian heritage Canadians who want to be pc, rather than immigrants kicking up shit.

actually it's older white liberals who are looking for reasons why a recent arrival might take offense because really, in the end, their so called 'tolerance' is just not so carefully masked paternalism.

No, I'll call bullshit here. The irony of an atheist complaining about the goal posts of Canadian culture changing is delicious because I suspect you'd be wailing and gnashing your teeth if the Lord's prayer were reintroduced.

And I'll play the game you like to enjoy.

Start rolling out your references here - the ones that go back to when all the PC bullshit began and prove this is just a bunch of recent immigrant malcontents demanding accommodation.

Rich you bitching about the erosion of Christian holidays.

I'll bitch about immigrants with the best of them. There are obvious cases where we bend over too far to accommodate them. Neither the Remembrance Day thing nor Christmas seem to be instances of that, at least not until more info comes out.

Oh stop. We bend over backwards to accommodate lots of groups as ling as they can bring to bear real organized political pressure. Immigrants are just one of the mix.
