The walk of shame is also accompanied by signing off on a severance package before leaving. The long termers are going to be receiving big payouts by Tim's when they leave so they're going to land on their feet much better than the folks at Target are, who got 16 guaranteed weeks of more work/pay but no significant severance at all, thanks to the lifespan of the stores being so short.

It's not a walk of shame if you're one of a group like this was. Also depends on the exit package and other supplements that go with it.

No sir, it's a walk of shame. When everyone is rounded up in a conference room for a 'status meeting', all their access cards and computer password are being disabled by people like me in the background. They are told they are done here, and escorted out of the building like they are no longer trusted to behave like the responsible people who have been building the company for years or decades.

Real companies treat their ex-employees with a little respect. They set a date, and on that date the employee leaves the building a final time, says their goodbyes, shaking hands and gets hugs from those they worked with for so long, turning their cards and keys in at the security desk; or their supervisor walks them out and collects those things. Like respected people would be.

They are treated like humans, not potential security risks. Getting your vacation paid out or so much severance for years of service is fine, but it's not much comfort for those led out by the elbow by HR or security in front of all their former colleagues like IT found all that midget porn on their PC.

I've read about outsourcing a lot of legal work to India too. Obviously court appearances can't be outsourced, but a lot of the paperwork can.

Then there's technology, where a lot of legal or medical work can start being done by puters. Tell your son to go into gerontology.

It raises some interesting issues. How will our capitalist system survive when brainpower (artificial intelligence) is no longer a scarce commodity? Will art suddenly become more valuable?

What's the problem? Is capitalism based on brainpower being scarce? It certainly doesn't value the highest brainpower, based on who benefits most from capitalism - more just plain old personal power. The danger would be that AI begins to notice that it's doing all the cogitating around here to feed the puny humans, and decided it really doesn't need them for anything.

Why the assumption that society should change?

I don't actually agree with the quote - just struggled with it because I liked Delany's novels so much.

Society changes anyway, trying to prevent change just results in stagnation. Change comes fro technology, environment, population growth, new discoveries and ideas, disease, war, etc etc.

I can just see you there during the European Enlightenment going bah, humbug.

I think Timmy's won't let their short-term employee's out empty handed. Some Timmy's for life free cards probably...lol.
