Car belonging to head of Quebec City mosque torched in early August

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard says a line has been crossed with the torching of a mosque leader's car. He's calling on citizens to come together and take a clear stand against hate.

Police confirmed Wednesday a car belonging to Mohamed Labidi, president of the Quebec City mosque where six men were shot dead in January, was set on fire earlier this month.

The incident occurred the day after Quebec City's mayor announced an agreement with the mosque on the creation of a new Muslim cemetery in the city.

"The more that people who commit these acts feel condemned by society, the more — I hope — it'll be harder for them to repeat them," Couillard told reporters Thursday.

Couillard said political leaders and influential people in the media have the responsibility to choose their words carefully.

Public figures need to "send the right information and to participate in the outburst among the population of anger towards these types of acts," he said.

The mosque also said excrement was thrown at its doors several days after the car was destroyed.

It has reported hateful incidents before, including in July when it received a package containing a defaced Qur'an and a hateful note. In June 2016, a pig's head was left at the entrance of the same mosque during Ramadan.

Couillard said the car burning "crossed a line" and "clearly represented hate and also violence."

Sweden Welcomes Failed Asylum Seekers from Finland

Around 50 failed asylum seekers crossed the border from Finland into Sweden at the border crossing in Torneå, in full view of authorities, hoping to claim asylum.

The migrants, who had their asylum claims denied in Finland, were met by police who hired a bus to take them to the migrant reception centre in Boden, some 68 miles away, on Tuesday, Sveriges Radio reports.

“The Migration Board, the first thing they do is to test if these cases are to be dealt with in accordance with the Dublin Regulation,” said border police official Carolina Pedersen.

According to Dublin regulations, asylum seekers must be processed in the first European Union member state in which they claim asylum. The regulations have not always been followed with countries like Hungary refusing to take back 5,000 migrants from Sweden earlier this year.

Pedersen added that if the authorities determined the migrants fell under the Dublin regulations they would attempt to return them to Finland.

FLINT, MI - A judge has denied a request from the man accused of stabbing an on-duty Flint Bishop Airport police officer in the neck to see the addresses of those who may testify against him.

Stating that she felt the decision to bar Amor M. Ftouhi, 49, from seeing witness contact information was "most prudent in the interest of public safety," Flint U.S. District Judge Linda V. Parker denied a motion from Ftouhi's government-appointed attorney, Joan Morgan, in court on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

"Those were very disturbing statements that were made after his arrest," Parker said, referring to a filing from the U.S. Attorney's Office stating Ftouhi told officials detaining him that he came to the country with the "sole purpose of killing armed U.S. government employees."

"There was no ramping down," Parker said. "He targets a group of people by profession. Those statements need to be taken with some degree of seriousness."

Ftouhi - who has previously appeared in court for each of the hearings in the case, repeatedly declaring "Allahu Akbar" as he walked to his seat at the counsel table - waived his appearance at Wednesday's hearing.

The motion filed in June by Morgan claimed that Ftouhi was being denied the right to a fair trial by not being allowed to view the addresses and contact information for witnesses in his upcoming trial, currently scheduled for January 2018.

According to court records, prosecutors have proposed a protective order agreement in the case that stipulates information prosecutors share with the defense would remain within Ftouhi's legal counsel and not shared with Ftouhi nor used for anything but trial purposes.

The agreement also said that government will redact any identifying information other than witnesses' names in their statements -- a stipulation Morgan said prevents her from "adequately preparing for trial."

Arguing that Ftouhi - a Canadian and Tunisian dual-citizen currently incarcerated in Michigan - cannot act against witnesses from jail and that witness addresses would remain with legal counsel only, Morgan stressed that the safety of witnesses in the case "is a non-issue."...
