wildrosegirl wildrosegirl: Guy_Fawkes Guy_Fawkes: wildrosegirl wildrosegirl: Working at Christmas is bullshit (unless you're an essential service worker, of course - unfortunately, they really have no choice).
Everything has become about making a buck and family values have become non-existent to employers. It all contributes to the further breakdown of our families and our society.
I think retailers, especially, should be forced to honour stat holidays and give their staff that time off with their families or be forced to pay a set fee for every hour they're in operation that day (eg: If retailers want to be open on stats, they should have to pay $5000/hour that they're open). If it became less lucrative, or they were actually losing money, they'd cut out this bullshit. If people didnt shop on stats the, stores wouldnt open their doors. Agreed. Which is why I am not one of the "Boxing Day Sale" shoppers. I refuse to contribute to it. What are you, against private enterprise? Next you'll want stores to close Sundays. And Boxing day, in BC at least, is not an official holiday.

FieryVulpine FieryVulpine: Let's face facts, there are essential jobs that require someone to be working on Christmas Day. Yep. I said that. I'm talking about money hungry retailers. There's a huge difference.

And Boxing day, in BC at least, is not an official holiday. Private enterprise - no. Opening on stats - yes. I'd love to see stores closed on Sundays. I'd also like to see the Mon-Fri late night shopping cease. It would give people more time with family and friends, which is FAR more important than opening the doors to a store. Nothing is so important that you can't wait til the next day. It's gotten ridiculous.

Ah, I must have overlooked that part, my apologies.
At least the mall I work at is closed on Christmas, not that it would attract many customers if it was. Interestingly, it will be open on New Years Day for the first time but I'm expecting it to be dead for the most part.

I know. I lived "small town" for 13 years. There's nothing wrong with it.

Sadly, once word gets out, it'll probably be quite busy.

Both of my parents worked when I was a kid, both had late nights or early mornings and my Dad had a job where he had to work on stats as well as shift work. All we did was shift our 'statday' to the one where we could all celebrate it. Just because you have to work Christmas doesnt mean you dont get to celebrate it, just do it on another day. If you MUST celebrate it on the 25 Im sure you can make some sort of arrangement with your coworkers.

But what's next, you going to pass legislation that stores have to pay their employees a living wage? Can't sell crap that falls apart after a couple of uses? Have to actually have some people working the floor to answer questions, and have those people actually know about the products they're selling?

I've only ever missed one Christmas at home and, as a rule, I do not work Christmas anymore. If the choice is to be with my family or to get another job then f*ck it, I'm getting another job.

And Boxing day, in BC at least, is not an official holiday. I remember when stores were closed on Sundays. I can't see that ever happening again OR stores not being open in the evenings. For some people these times are when it's most convenient to do their shopping because of work schedules and other lifestyle factors. I used to hate trying to grocery shop on a Saturday and found that 8:00 in the evening early in the week was the most peaceful time to get it done. Funny how alot of people don't realize that about Boxing Day. For Government (all levels), banking and union employees it is treated as a stat, but in the private sector it is not. A manufacturing company I used to work for would be closed for that extra day (due to overwhelming requests by employees the owner would reluctantly agree) but it was not a paid day, most employees opted to use up a vacation day or just be short 8 hours. My current employer is closed tomorrow but Sunday is just another day at work. It'll be a busy one too.
