Streaker Streaker:

Uh-huh. So...

Would the US army have taken Keys' claims seriously, or would it have simply tried to bury them?

Probably taken them seriously, and if they didn't, then he could go further. However he skipped that, and went straight to being a coward. Man up or shut the fuck up.

Instead he tried to cover his own ass. Nice role model you have.

Yeah, by speaking up about what he saw he was covering his ass. Sure.
By fleeing to Canada instead of reporting what he saw and taking his lumps he is a coward. We don't need any more of that crap in this country.

Go further and maybe face a whole lot of thinly-veiled threats?

Reporting what he saw would quite likely have resulted in..... nothing.

And yet when I search in google I can find a multitude of pages about soldiers being charged for their crimes. What made this guy, or you for that matter believe that this time would be different? I wonder if he could have saved someones life if he had done the right thing. What a coward.

Oh FFS. Don't join the army if you can't go to war.

What's a soldier to do then when he sees his comrades committing atrocities?

What was he doing there in the first place? If you can't deal with the facts of war, don't join the army. You know shit like this happens, and you know what to do when you see it happen. If you can't deal with that, don't join the army.

It is no rocketscience.

By not facing those he is a coward. Thank you for proving my point.

Some people are too naive to know this until they're stuck in the middle of a war, though. Then the reality settles in.

Are they morally bound to remain a party to human rights abuses because of contractual obligations?

That's just silly. If he sees it as wrong for the military to abuse the locals presumably he would see it as wrong for his comrades to threaten him.

If he doesn't have any faith left in the military as an institution why should he continue playing the military's game?

Maybe his efforts to shed some light on what's happening in Iraq will help to save more lives than if he had reported what he saw to his superiors, who would in all likelihood have tried their best to give him the old brush-off.

Like I just finished posting, there is no reason to believe that. Do a google search, there are many instances of soldiers being charged. Therefore there is no reason to believe his complaint would have been brushed off. Also now that he has spoken up, he needs to go back to the US and take his lumps. If he's going to accuse people of atrocities the least he can do is take his punishment and not be a hypocrite.

The army-training should have prevented that from happening.

He should have reported it. And yes, you signed a contract, you are bound to obey. It is the military, not Microsoft.

lol ah well the Iraqis went about it all wrong.

See, the Viets kept American troops nice and drugged up off opium, heroin and hash.

Iraqis aren't sharing the good shit, that's why US soldiers are all twitchy

Is that a valid distinction to be making when human rights are at stake?

I agree though that training should prevent these things from happening, but then why are horrors being perpetrated by US personnel in Iraq?

I'm still left dumbfounded by the suggestion that contractual obligations trump human rights.
