Hyack Hyack:
Okay, I'm running Windows 8.1, why would I want to upgrade to Windows 10? What advantages are there, ease of operating, safety and vulnerability?

Keep it, According to Doc Caleb Win 10 has more Microsoft spy's than Win 8.1

1) because if you don't do the upgrade by July, you'll have to pay to upgrade it.
2) because if you're NOT using Classic Shell on your Windows 8.x you're using a computer wrong. MSoft saw the error of their ways and abandoned it, its a historical artifact now like AmigaOS or BoB. If you ARE using Classic Shell see #1
If you're actually so concerned about them "spying" I really can't help you. I'm just a computer specialist not a shrink. I could tell you to use Linux, but I know you (you in a general sense) just fucking won't.

I cheated made my son check. Of course I had to listen to the nattering about not believing stuff you read on line and the questions about who you people are anyway. Then he had to look up about the program and natter some more.

After all that pain it wasn't there.

I really hate changing operating systems. Can you even upgrade from 7 to 10?

If your Windows 7 had been updating properly it would have been nagging to you to upgrade for the last six months.
Removing Quicktime isn't vital - Windows updates are.

I thought the big deal with windows 10 was you had to pay for everything else?

My other concern is that I still play all the retro games... Sim City 4, AoE II, etc. Just got back into Roller Coaster tycoon. Getting windows 8 to support them was a nightmare, I can't imagine Windows 10 is any better.

Oh, I am using classic shell. The fellow that made it should be a millionaire.

I take it that you heard of Good Old Games?

https://www.gog.com/

They have tons of retro games that are compatible with Win 7/8, most for less than $10.

I got Sid Meier's Alpha Centuri for $5.99 or something.

If they have the game you want, go there and save yourself the headache.

I thought Alpha sucked the big one. I have Civ 5 and Skyrim V, and that's it right now. Both work fine with Windows 10.

Yeah it has been nagging at me but really I hate change so I was ignoring it. I don't upgrade things in a timely manner. I actually expect things to last which I know does work with computers. Apparently this last question was the last straw well that and my computer is almost tx. My son is now going to set up his old tower for me and it's running ubuntu so I guess I'm learning a new operating system.

I loved Alpha Centuri - it was basically Civ in space, and the factions were more interesting than the nationalities Civ used...but I guess each to their own. [B-o]

This. I really enjoyed the original games. Loved play Zarharov and racing through the tech trees to get planet busters ASAP. Always won the war against the factions once I built up a small arsenal of them (25 or so), but the planet hated my guts.

Crossfire was... boring.

Although it is great to learn a new operating system (they're all the same - you point at what you want- you click), if you upgrade to 10 you won't really have to learn one. It works like XP, Vista and Windows 7, its not completely off the wall like Windows 8. Take you maybe an hour to get used to it.

My eleventeen year old cheap acer laptop with windows 7 and a ripped off keyboard and the no longer working touchpad, plus the broken disk thingie wanted to upgrade way back when and I let it and it isn't much different and it still works, better even a little I think. PDT_Armataz_01_25
