Avenatti tweeted a declaration made in the name of Julie Swetnick, a resident of Washington DC, which said she had met Kavanaugh and his school friend Mark Judge in the early 1980s and attended the same parties.

The declaration said she had “observed Brett Kavanaugh drink excessively at these parties and engage in abusive and physically aggressive behaviour towards girls, including pressing girls against him without their consent, ‘grinding’ against girls and attempting to remove or shift girls’ clothing to expose private body parts”.

Swetnick, 55, said she was at parties where Kavanaugh and his friend Judge were involved in situations that resulted in women being gang-raped.

She wrote: “I witnessed efforts by Mark Judge, Brett Kavanaugh and others to cause girls to become inebriated and disoriented so they could then be ‘gang-raped’ in a side room or bedroom by a ‘train’ of numerous boys…”

“In approximately 1982, I became the victim of one of these ‘gang’ or ‘train’ rapes where Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh were present.”

Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual misconduct by two other women. He strenuously denies all the allegations. He is due at a public hearing on Capitol Hill on Thursday to answer allegations from the first of the three women who have accused him of sexual assault or misconduct, California professor Christine Blasey Ford.

Swetnick said she was a graduate of Gaithersburg high school in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and that she currently holds government security clearances to work for the US treasury, the US Mint and the Internal Revenue Service. She said she previously held clearances with the departments of state, justice, homeland security and customs and border protection. A résumé for Swetnick that was posted online said she worked for the government agencies as an IT contractor.

Swetnick said she met Kavanaugh and Judge – who Ford alleged was the third person in the room when Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school. Kavanaugh and Judge have denied Ford’s allegations.

But Swetnick said in her statement: “There is no question in my mind that Mark Judge has significant information concerning the conduct of Brett Kavanaugh during the 1980s, especially as it relates to his actions towards women.”

She said: “I attended well over 10 house parties in the Washington DC area during the years 1981-1983 where Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh were present.”

She went on: “I have reviewed Brett Kavanaugh’s recent claim on Fox News regarding his alleged ‘innocence’ during his high school years and lack of sexual activity. This claim is absolutely false and a lie. I witnessed Brett Kavanaugh consistently engage in excessive drinking and inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women during the early 1980s.”

I'd be interested to see what the "inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women during the early 1980s.” consisted of. Because what was acceptable behaviour in the 1980's isn't now and if she's basing her accusations on this centuries excessive moral parameters then we have a problem.

These accusations would be more believable if this tactic hadn't been used before to prevent someone from getting elected and I'd be alot more accepting of the premise that Kavanaugh might be guilty if this was the first time. But, on the surface this looks like a carbon copy of the (accuse and never prove) methodology used to prevent people like Roy Moore and Patrick Brown from becoming elected. So, to say it but I'm more than a little skeptical about the veracity of these allegations would be an understatement especially since the bar for the finding of guilt in these instances don't seem to include proof anymore.

It'll also be interesting to see what Ms Ford's testimony brings to the table because unless she can actually bring real evidence to bear rather than just her accusations this might just end up backfiring on her supporters in the Democratic camp.

Whatever else happens it's been enough to confirm at least one thing, and that's that Kavanaugh is a liar who has to jump through hoops in order to present himself with a moral image he doesn't even remotely live up to. Between that and his stated beliefs that a president is off-limits just like a king is he's show himself to be exactly the sort of person a cretin like Donald Trump would propose for a serious lifelong office.

This will all be forgotten in time anyway because Kavanaugh will still be confirmed with 100% GOP support and with enough support from craven gutless Dems to safely get past the threshold required. If exposing him as a creep, a liar, a hypocrite, and just another tedious serial abuser of women is a victory then it's the only victory the non-MAGA & non-GOP side is going to get out of this. Read the fine print - Trump & the rest of the fucking right-wing crazies are still going to win at the end of all this.

Regardless of whether he's appointed or not isn't really the issue. What's at play here and in other cases is the basic tenets of an unbiased judicial system being subverted to the point where the use of "accusations" with no foundation or proof become a defacto finding of guilt and tool for partisan political thuggery.

Unfortunately if conservatives like Kavanaugh, Roy Moore and Patrick Brown can be kept from elected or appointed office based on unfounded or uncorroborated accusations how can the left who's championing these people expect this tactic to stop when they get into power?

My guess is that we've just seen the tip of the iceberg and if this unfounded, uncorroborated and politically motivated accusation crap continues, every appointment and nomination going forward will now come replete with their own prerequisite group of accusers.

I wouldn't include Patrick Brown on that list because he got submarined by his own political party from within, not the other parties, and by CTV looking for a cheap ratings-grabber to liven up a moribund Ontario political scene. As for the other two, Moore & Kavanaugh, I rest on the freely chosen belief that their willing association with the utterly reprehensible far right-wing extreme of American politics, doubled-down on by their endorsements from Trump, are enough to prove that they are scummy themselves and have most likely been accurately accused of misdeeds. They run with a shitty crowd so they're probably shitty themselves. And I don't need a court verdict to prove that assessment, all I need is my own eyes, observation skills, a basic working knowledge of how the far-right operates, and a oft-proven correct view of the types of people that make it far in the hierarchy of that odious ideology.
