Hmm, I think you're on to something there, Lily.

I bet if we applied that to the problem, we'd all get the same answer!

x+y-y would equal x, but x-y+y would be x-2y

All this does is beg the question: which operation is performed first, addition or subtraction?

IT'S THE SAME OPERATION! Subtraction is just addition of a negative number.

x+y-y is (x)+(y)+(-y)

x-y+y is (x)+(-y)+(y)

No matter which addition you do first, you get the same thing: x. The order doesn't matter. How did you manage to pass math? Or did you?

(6)(8-5)+9 = 27

Numbers are what one makes of them.

It's been enjoyable, boys and girls!

(6x8)-(5+9) = 34

34/2 = 17 x 3 = 51!

So she DOES get the GPS!

Forgive me, a minor tangent related to maths confusion:

Verizon Math

If you've got some time listen to the audio clip (27 minutes long) it's pretty funny.

Oh, the confusion!

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
RPW RPW:
8(6 - 5) + 9
Stop putting things in brackets. You do not need any god damn brackets. It twists the math equation.

The fucking question is 8 x 6 - 5 + 9

8 x 6 is 48
48 - 5 is 43
And 43 + 9 is 52.

No fucking brackets. I repeat NO DAMN BRACKETS AT ALL. Brackets change the question all together!

God, I would just love to see you try and tell your weird twisted math to someone in Grade 5. Even they would know that you're completely wrong.

When you grow up and do some real math you might need BRACKETS.
