The Taiwanese electorate has handed the independence minded DPP their collective asses. Out of 113 seats in the newly re-arranged legislature, the KMT has secured 81 and perhaps a couple more. The presidential election is to be held in March.

The people were pissed with them and they really sent a clear message to Chen and Co. about the way the DPP has mishandled the island's formerly vibrant economy. The KMT campaigned on economic and domestic matters while the DPP has been obsessed with having Taiwan admitted into the UN, much to the chagrin of the US.

Not really. If anything, things should settle down and the economy should improve. Unification will likely occur in the next 10 years, if not sooner. The final tally for the Nationalists and their allies is 86 seats out of 113, with the DPP holding 27. They've just reduced the seats in their legislature by almost half and adaopted a system similar to Germany, with MPs at large.

I'm not up to snuff on Taiwanese politics but I take it these people want to join China or at least eventually?

The majority prefer the staus quo. Only a minority want outright independence. The KMT has always stated that it was their intention to return to China and rule it. In the end economics is the deciding factor over all others.
