Finally got around to finishing the campaign and it can be described in two words: utterly disappointing

Pros:
- online play allows the turning off of respawn and health regen for maps
- Weapons level up as they are used

Cons:
- Stealth is now almost completely gone except for the extremely annoying stealth missions
- Has gone away from being a tactical shooter and is now just a generic shooter with the extra of having teams with whom your only ability is to say 'go here' or 'shoot him', no more 'Bravo, move to, Foxtrot" voice commands that defined the original
- Human wave tactics and complete abandoning of their old market
- Some missions are insanely easy with others being ridiculously hard (one involved attacking a frigate while the main gun is firing at you and infantry make you have to shoot them too)
- Somehow the enemies have a sixth sense and before I even know they are there they start firing (I had one machine gun near the end start firing before I even knew anyone was in that part)

SOCOM 4 has completely disappointed me and it is the death of another great series from my childhood, do not buy if you want something refreshing from CoD style games.


Anyone else play it (and previous ones) and feel similar?

Nope. Myself, I won't play 'scripted' games anymore because they're just boring. Give me a game map and a different players each time I play so that every round is fresh and challenging and I'm there.

SOCOM has some destructible environment (mostly your cover) but I am waiting on Battlefield 3 so I can buy it for PS3 and enjoy free online gameplay.

This is pretty common for PC game follow ups. It seems like lately any addition to the franchise is guaranteed to be weaker and less fun than the one before it. Take for example Dragon 2, Mass Effect 2, Command and Conquer, just to name a few.

Ever now and then we get one that holds true to the ones before it like Civilization 4 but it’s more the exception than the rule.

I'm an Admin on the CKA Black Ops server. It doesn't get as much use as it should. Too bad we don't play more often. I'll have to fire up BFBC2 and see if it's changed any.

BFBC2 is pretty awesome. The destructible environment is awesome. The only downside to me are the irritating chopper whores who troll the game. On the CKA server it's nice to be an admin so I can ask these guys to take a round off from flying so other people can have fun, too.

The worst thing I've seen with a chopper whore is a guy getting onto the CKA server in one round and we had 32 people on it (full) and after a while it got down to 20 with this idiot. It's just not fun to play with some people.

That's why I stopped with BFBC2. If it wasn't the hackers with the overlays and aimbots, it was the Karl Gustav whores who also moonlight as spawn campers.

I like the server admin power. It was something sorely missed in Modern Warfare 2. What's funny are the guys who think it's a court of law and somehow I need 'evidence' to kick or ban them. I watch them get headshots through walls, where they couldn't possibly have seen someone spawn - that's enough for me. *punt!*

Bart, practice with the tracer darts. Always Engineer with RPG (with the extra hate option) on all helo maps.

FWIW, our clan set up a few private matches to practice in and that team building skill helps to shut the chopper whores down. Circle strafing anywhere near us is a sure death sentence.

Oh yeah, I just can't get the keyboard command thing down pat. It's aggravating to say the least.
