I'm looking to get a game console soon and I'm wondering which people here prefer.

I only plan on using it for Netflix and maybe the odd game or two (don't have all that much spare time with two little ones), but the wife wants something for dance games (to lose some baby fat and have some fun).

The X-Box has Kinect, which looks like it would be better for dancing games and of course it has Halo, which is awesome.

However, the PS3 also makes sense to me because it also plays Blu-Ray, in addition to games, but I wonder if Playstation Move is any better than a Wii.

Your thoughts?

I would look around and see the game options that best suit your wife. I would think that Wii or XBox may be a better fit than the PS3.

Personally, I have two PS3's and a Wii....the Wii is great for exercise games and kids games and the PS3 is great for Call of Duty, Battlefield 3 and Blu-Rays :)

I have a PS3 and a Wii but use a PC to game with. I got the PS3 to go along with my entertainment system which works great. Although I only use it for Blu-Ray, as you mentioned it has many more uses.

The PS3 is a 6 year-old platform. The PS4 is due out (by all accounts) next fall. If PlayStation is your choice, I'd suggest waiting for the next generation of the unit.

If gaming isn't the main reason, it may be cheaper to go with the PS3 now.

If you're not going to play too many games I'd go sit the ps3. Mostly because of the blueray player. Also I would say the interface for Netflix is better than on the Xbox. Also the online servi e for the ps3 is free unlike Xbox live which again, is a waste if you're not going to play games that much.

Now all you PS3 fans are making good points...

But Xbox has Halo... Nothing else matters.

A few things no one has really brought up that should be addressed:

1. the XBOX online service is a paid for service. You have to pay a monthly or yearly fee to play many of your games online. Personally it's a big turn off for me but each to his own.

2. The XBOX online community despite some people blind insistence to the contrary is not a 5 star community. Racial slurs and remarks against women are way way more common then should be the case. It's bad enough I wouldn't let my kids ever go online on the system.

3. There is a distinct difference in the libraries of the two systems but it isn't much. XBOX seems more focused on shooters and zombie type games. The PS3 has a lot of very similar titles but it's more focused on the artistic older crowd with things like Journey, Heavy Rain, the Uncharted series, etc. It has it's fair share of violent games (God of War being a great example) but the user base is older and online play has a distinct lack of voice chat.

4. If you wait the next XBOX is highly likely to have blu ray built in. It's no guarantee but MS would be crazy not to include it. The netflix interface on the ps3 is the best I've used out of all 3 systems though.

Sorry, but Halo is the best console game (at least the first two were - I haven't played 3 or 4) out there - if it wasn't, every new game wouldn't be labelled a 'Halo killer'.

Xbl is still cheaper per month than WoW and I'd say you get what you pay for. I can't remember the last time it was down for maitainence or any other problem. But you are right in the next point. There are a few too many 10 year olds who k ow way too many racial slurs.

According to Xbox World and Playstation4.com, both are coming out with new platforms next year.

However, I doubt I'm going to be willing to pay the $400-$600 they'll both want for their new system, no matter how good they sound.

Nowadays, I'm far from an early adopter because I've been burned too many times in the past by hype.

I already have a Wii, and while it's fun, my wife wants something we can use for Netflix too. I've tried connecting it to my wireless, but the connection sucks, so we're planning on getting something new, and leaving the Wii in the basement for our daughters to use.

The biggest reason we looked at XBox was because of Kinect - but I'm not a fan of having to pay a monthly fee for XBox Live (versus PSN which is free). I also like the idea of having another Blu-Ray player in the house.
