Pandas in Wuhan market? China’s COVID genetic study is out—it has problems

$1:
Chinese scientists have published their long-awaited genetic analysis of the samples and swabs they collected in early 2020 from the Huanan Seafood Market, the initial epicenter of the pandemic.

Here’s the full analysis of newly uncovered genetic data on COVID’s origins
In the study, published Wednesday in Nature, the authors acknowledge for the first time that wildlife susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection—including raccoon dogs—were present in the market amid the plethora of genetic traces from SARS-CoV-2 and humans. But, the overall analysis is flawed, indicating the presence of animals that were almost certainly not at the market, including giant pandas, chimpanzees, and Atlantic grey seals. The authors continued to downplay the potential that a virus spillover from wildlife to humans in the crowded market was the spark that ignited the pandemic. Instead, they repeatedly put forward, without evidence, hypotheses favored by Chinese officials, namely that the virus was carried into the market via humans or frozen foods, and the bustling venue became an amplifier site for infection.

Still, the publication of the data is momentous—and a long time coming. Though the samples were collected from January 1 to March 30 of 2020, a draft of the study and some of the data were only first released in a preprint two years later, in February 2022. The preprint reported that SARS-CoV-2 was abundant amid human genetic material from the samples, indicating that the virus was prevalent among people at the market before it was shuttered on the morning of January 1. The authors, led by scientists at China's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), noted that they had also tested some animals in the market—mostly rabbits, stray cats, and snakes—but all were negative for SARS-CoV-2.

Wisconsin Supreme Court won’t order ivermectin use for COVID-19

$1:
The decision upholds a lower court’s ruling against Allen Gahl, who sued Aurora in October 2021 when doctors refused to treat his uncle, John Zingsheim, with ivermectin. Gahl was authorized to make medical decisions for Zingsheim and had researched the drug online after Zingsheim was put on a ventilator to treat COVID-19 complications.

Ivermectin became popular among conservatives after commentators and even some far-right doctors held up the antiparasitic drug as a miracle cure for the coronavirus and other illnesses. But the Food and Drug Administration has not approved it for use in treating COVID-19 and warns that misusing ivermectin can be harmful, even fatal.

Well, this isn't directly covid related but mask related anyway.

I had a bitch challenge me on Monday as to why I was wearing a mask. She comes in the store and comes up to me to inquire about a product. When I started to reply she stops me and says, very snarky, "Why are you wearing that THING?" pointing at my face. I calmly replied that I am protecting myself as best I can in order to protect my spouse who is currently in the hospital and at risk of further infection and even my getting any bug right now would not be good. She turned to walk away and my manager intervened and took over showing her where the shit she was inquiring about was located. The fellow behind her in line smiled at me and gently clapped his hands and said "Good for you!"

I recognized her as a semi-regular customer who, during covid, was one of those anti-maskers who called it all bs so no surprise. It made me wonder if she does that everywhere she goes where some people are still wearing one in public.

My sister told me she was in Emergency (she's a nurse) and a woman who brought in a 4 year old who'd been bitten by a dog went Full Covid Karen when they "dared to suggest" her son should get a Tetanus shot.
Await the coming return of smallpox, polio and the Plague...

I can't help but wonder how many of the anti-maskers out there are now wearing one due to the horrible conditions being caused by wildfire smoke...
