$1:
Nutrition watchdog group Center for Science in the Public Interest is formally recommending that consumers avoid sucralose. Artificial sweetener Splenda is sucralose-based.

It’s a big deal considering this is the same company that listed sucralose as a safe alternative to sugar prior to the new research findings.

There are quite a few people out there that consume this like there's no tomorrow. I bought a bag last summer of the granulated and the brown sugar, and I've barely used any. I occasionally have a Splenda based coffee syrup as a treat in the afternoon and that's about it. I don't put sweetener on cereal and if I have yogurt i add fruit to sweeten it.

In related news, birth remains the no.1 cause of death.

For those too stupid to eat a smaller piece of cake - $30 worth of Splenda instead of sugar. Same people who buy half size cans of Coke for $1 more
I remember sprinkling sugar on a grapefruit when I was a kid (they only had the sour/bitter white ones in the store back then) but FFS I saw a friend letting her kid put sugar on a goddam watermelon last summer. Where I live, take a look at what's in people's shopping carts when the rez cheques come out. We're MAKING diabetics as fast as we possibly can.

Xylitol

Xylitol, malitol and similar sweetners are also laxatives in any meaningful quantity. Enough to bake a cake would mean anything near a slice of cake would mean an afternoon on the toilet. And you can't bake with them anyhow.

Splenda is almost a sugar substitute you can bake with. But cakes and things end up not rising very high.

Better to just use sugar, and have smaller portions or skip sweets altogether.

I mostly use sugar, but I skip the cakes and such. Just sugar in my tea, cereal, bread, and who knows where else they add it.

But I have a couple of xylitol candies after dinner. Gives the sense of having something sweet without wanting to eat a whole bunch as it would with sugar that gives that high - low reaction.

Exactly. Most candies have a blend of more than one sweetener so you can have more than two without getting the trots.

I hardly ever use sugar. I tend to use honey or blue agave in my tea.

If I use splenda, it would be in a place I'd use sugar, and then I use it 50/50 with sugar. Like in a pie.

Only time I have sweetener is with my breakfast cereal with blackberries, just a dash of maple syrup.
