In actual fact we're not slipping but gaining.

During the last two years of the Molruney tenure we were number one - at the beginning of the new millennium we had slipped to number eight and have now attained number four. The UN admits there is much hair-splitting amongst the data used to determine the difference among the top 25 countries listed, a slight shift of which could easily result in number 25 becoming number four and number four becoming fifteen.

Canada was able to gain this year due to the fact that Canadian GDP increased, which is pretty much a statistical technicality. The World Bank recently revised its formula used for calculating per capita GDP, and the UN gets its data from the World Bank. Had the old formula been used, Canada would have risen to 6th place this year. Canada should also focus on fighting poverty, as it rated 12th on the Human Poverty Index.

You must also remember that the difference between the top developed countries is not much at all, and the UN has always warned governments to not use this study to boast about achievements because it doesn't completely portray life in each country. I personally don't like the study all that much because it doesn't take into consideration culture, which is a huge consideration for me. Culture can make a place wonderful to live in.

sorry chingeeng, and Tman aswell if I also displeased you. yes this was originally just for the point of raising a dead thread from the grave. but I thought to myself that I should atleast try to make a point. I suppose I was too harsh in what I said. by I stand by it, I feel that the first nations people in Canada should move off the reserve and get jobs. Just north of me is a small reserve, pluse numerous others all around the island. Most the natives there are unemployed, and in some places the natives are starving to death, even with government grants.

I however, do know of several natives that have moved from their original reserve to what is sometimes called the white world. One of them happens to be my scocial studies teacher. He still lives on the reserve though. And he says he'd much rather not, as it makes him feel guilty that his fellow teachers have to pay taxes. some of which just happen to go to the natives.

Again, I stand by my point, if natives were to move to the working world, then they would be much better off themselves, and it would get rid of alot of the poverty stricken. Aswell as push canada up a few more points on that damn scale (which no one really cares about unless your on top anyways).

I know that not all the native population lives on reserves, and I know that an even smaller amount of the native population is unemployed. But in my areas, both those categories are the majority, and I do not mean to offend any natives, or anyone over this. Again I am sorry to those I have insulted. But I still stand to my point.

Natives always say they want ot preserve their culture. Well, the Native's culture didn't include my tax dollars hundreds/thousands of years ago. B: Join our society.

Housing on reserves is through Canada Mortgage and Housing. Usually our bands members sign mortgages for 20 years. We are having a hell of a time ensuring there are jobs so they can pay off these mortgages. Try to get some facts you people.
Also learn what the treaty negotiations entailed.
No we don't want your tax dollar!. we were quite self sufficient until settler society destroyed our economic base. 1. by outlawing trade with Indians. 2. Illegally expropriating the forests and waters for themselves. Our people were thrown into prison to make way for the settlers.
I have said it a dozen times on CKA, we are legally entitled to our half of the natural resources. With that we can build our infrustructure and pay for our economy.
It is a fact that the mining, forestry and fisheries sector conttributed to the lions share of building the infrustructure that is Queens Park in Ontario.

oh. and autonomy is not just the reserves. We are guaranteed the full and free access to our traditional territories.
And I remind you that breaking the treaties is like breaking any contract or lease.
