While I agree there’s a left bias some of the time, the news presented and more balanced than just about any national news service. Without the CBC, the regionalism would become worse than it is now. I like to know what’s going on in other parts of the country, and nobody else does it.

I lived in the states for awhile and other than National Radio, or PBS, most Americans hear very little about the various regions of their own country. It really shows.

Keep ‘em. It makes us smarter about the country we live in.

Even my regional paper covers more world (let alone Canadian) news than the CBC does...

Except that reporting is completely culled from wire services and takes no effort to include in a paper save for editing for space and import.

If your newspaper is delivered with updates every 15 minutes, great. Otherwise don’t count on staying up to date on what’s going on.

Try driving across the country. There's only one radio network that is available nationally, and in places you’ll probably never go. No private sector company has, ever or would ever provide that kind of service. BC is one of the best examples. There are re-transmitters in just about every valley where no other service is available.

Should the CBC be Privatized?

The original Mandate is no longer needed and Private Corps have picked up the ball, to a large extent, on Canadian Content/Programming. I'm still kinda leery about Privatizing the CBC though. It is still the best source of News in the nation, especially 24 hour News. Despite its' increasing US Content, it is also still the leader for Canadian Content/Programming. I'd like to see the CBC receive a new Mandate rather than being Privatized.

Hey, I'm new here and I've never been asked before! :P

I think of the CBC much like the Post Office. Privatized, and they'll only be delivering mail in Toronto where they can make a profit.

I know that when I drive out into the Fraser Valley I have to pick between 4 different frequencies between AM and FM because of the topology here. Most of the Vancouver stations get weak to the point they aren't worth listening to.

So it seems that in the majority of peoples minds the CBC shoud be privatized. It would be a huge tax saving to taxpayers, even some lefties.

I wonder how the left and extrme left would react if the Harper government moved to privatize it

And a private company can't do that?

I still have not seen ANY reason why the CBC must have such a ridiculous amount of funding.

If you want updated news every 15 minutes, go online. Like you go online for updated news, because on TV, you're NOT gonna find it.

The point is a private company WON'T do that like a Private post office wouldn't deliver mail to rural areas where it costs too much.

I agree it needs to be more carefully monitored.

There are still huge numbers of people that either can't or won't ever go online either because it costs money for a computer and online access or there is simply no internet available to them.

The radio and TV services don't cost anyone to receive and is available in more places than the internet is. I practiced for awhile in northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and I was glad for CBC radio or even a poor TV signal over rabbit ears.

I rather enjoy listening to Radio Netherlands on CBC along with another dozen Public Broadcasters from around the world.
