I think we need a good Department of National Defence. There is no doubt about it. We need a lot more people in our armed forces. We need trucks. We need guns. We need bases all along our borders. We need destroyers. We could even use a couple of decent submarines. We could also use enough brainpower in our leadership to puzzle out what the word "DEFENCE" means. Right now we need to defend our country against a certain foriegn power who is trying to coerce us into helping him pay for bases to help with his defence, not ours, which he wants to locate on Canadian soil.

Robair Robair:
Back to the original post topic.... what the hell to Canadian subs need torpedoes for??? They are used to sneak up on people fishing illegally or smuggling stuff and then report their positions to the RCMP from what I understand. When is Canada going to need to take out a battleship with a torpedo?

Uuhhhh hmmmm if a possible threat to Canada enters Canadian waters ohhh say sometime in the future or whatnot, tell me what the hell the Sub is going to deter the possible threat entering Canadian waters with? RAMMING SPEED!!!! Sorry, I believe the Romans used that technique a loooooooooong time ago, and I do believe its way outdated.

 This has got to be karra.
Are you suggesting we now sink boats full of hopefull immigrants and those fishing illegaly in Canadian waters? Or maybe shoot suspected smugglers first and ask questions later? The subs work great (when they work) for sneaking up on criminals, observing criminal activity, then reporting the criminals position without torpedoes. It's not like they're rendered useless, that is what the Canadian millitary planned to do with them anyway.

We are getting torpedoes in '06, can you see us at war with a nation owning subs and warships before then?

Torpedoes are the least of our worries, a sailor died today because of God knows what went wrong on the oldest of the two bit used up heaps we've apparently invested in from Britan.

The Subs have defense measures. The sonar decoy thingys and such (not up on my technical sub jargon, sorry). And they will have torpedoes (for what I don't know) in '06. Who, exactly, are you thinking will attack a Canadian sub patroling Canadian waters?

Keep in mind, it has to be somebody with the capability of finding a submarine...

Ok its a hypothetical situation, it could happen then again maybe it wont. All im saying is to the person questioning on why a Canadian sub would even need torpedos, to which I respond in a hypothetical manner by saying we need them for defense for IF we are attacked. Consider the question of Naval defense and then you just answered your last question.

And also im sure even a third world country has the capability to detect a sub with sonar. WWII is long gone.

I have to admit, the comic is quite funny!

But back to being serious, does this surprise you? Look at how much money has been put into the military after over a decade of liberal rule of this country.

While I don't believe we should have a massive army like the United States spending ridiculous amounts, but we should keep them at minimum, adequitely funded.

Isn't the delay in getting the torpedos because of a decision to re-fit the subs to take US-made armaments? Maybe we should have stuck with the made in England version.

I don't really see the need for the subs anyways but I supose they'll work better going under ice than through it.

Godz46 is right on this one.

I'm torn about the purchase of the subs. I can't see them being cost effective except in the arctic.

Submarines may be good at surveillance but we are in our own waters so we don't need to hide. If we're looking to patrol our shorelines, a large feet of ships would be much better and significantly cheaper. Even equipping the lighthouses with a radar network would help us monitor the coast better than our one western sub.

From my understanding, the subs were to be used to play hide and seek with the US navy, more that filling a real need in our defence. While this may be a valuable thing, I don't see it effective at patrolling our coasts.

The one place I could see us using submarines is the high arctic because they can travel under the ice. I think it's only the nuclear boats that are best suited for that however. We may be able to do the same thing by going over the ice.
